1974D Lincoln reverse die chip or cud ?

Can anyone tell me if this is considered a die chip or a cud ? I've looked at 100's of thousands of Lincolns and this is the first I've seen this particular error. Thanks in advance for any comments.

  • It's really hard to tell anything without more of the coin for reference... but it certainly IS NOT a cud... a cud is basically a die break, that occured at the edge of the die, leaving a raised blank space...

It's unusual, looks like a progressive die break. George is right, though...it would have to be at the edge of the design to be a CUD.

  • Here's a larger scan.
  • Looks like a small chunk of the die broke off and fell away. I don't know cents, so I don't know if that's a recognized error/variety or not. If it's not slabbed yet, I would go through ANACS first. They are better at designating errors and varieties and your best chance of getting a designation would come from them. Then submit to PCGS or NGC in the ANACS slab. If they see the notation on the ANACS slab, they might denote it on one of their own.

It's not a cud, since the die break doesn't involve the rim. It's too big for a mere die chip. It is, instead, an "interior die break" (internal die break). A sizable flake spalled off the die face.
