Proof State Quarters????

I pulled out 6 state quarters(proofs),3 out of the 6 are frosted and the other 3 have the proof finish. What conditions will cause this to happen? The frosted ones are Maryland,Virginia and Massachusetts.

  • Pulled them from where?
  • The coins minted early in the run when the dies were still sharp and fresh tend to show the white frosting on the devices that makes them CAMS or DCAMS. As the dies begin to wear, they don't leave such a sharp impression on the coin metal. It's a gradual process. The earliest coins will usually be your DCAMS, fading to CAMS and then to the 'normal' proofs. They use the dies a fairly long time, relatively speaking unless there's a problem, so the bulk of proofs produced are usually the lesser variety with the CAMS and DCAMS being in the minority. That's why the really nice ones with icy white devices and deep mirror finishes are worth so much more.
