Did anyone read about the S.S. Republic shipwreck in this month's National Geographic?

An amazing article. The best I've ever read on a shipwreck. And you know how great NG's pictures are. I love to see the photos where its just stacks and stacks of Twenty Libs. Hell, they even talk about...cleaning.

My favorite quote, "A dent, a fingerprint, even a crab claw scratch from a curious crab during the transfer into Zeus's (that mini submarine) receptacle can lower a coin's value".

A FRIGGIN CRAB CLAW SCRATCHimage.....I though we had to worry about lasers, putty, artificial toning, etc. But a CRAB CLAW SCRATCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!??????????

I did see it and was considering posting, but thought I'd leave it up to someone else. It's a very good article, and some of the pictures are incredible.

Crab claws and coins are a great combination. As long as the coins are slabbed and you are EATING the crab claws image
  • Read it. Good article, great photos too. National Geographic is one of the best rags out there.

I browsed through it in the dentist's waiting room the other morning. It was a neat article. For some reason, the picture of all the Seated halves on the sea bottom affected me more than the double eagles, somehow. I did not have time to read all of the article, but I looked at the pictures and read the captions. I noticed one fact they flubbed a bit. In the caption regarding the Seated halves, which were O-mints, their wording implied that ALL New Orleans mint coins are worth a fortune.

All the bottles and stuff were fascinating, too. And what is also interesting is that if you drew a straight east-west line from that shipwreck to shore, the line would pass near, if not through, my hometown. I can look right out across the ocean directly toward the wreck (which is of course waaay offshore, but it's still neat to think about).

I got a chuckle on the crab claw mention, too. Next thing you know, "The Crab Claw Effect" will be a numismatic buzzword. image

Maybe I'd better go pick up that copy. I'd like to read the rest of the article. Those pictures were amazing.
