  • Maybe it's the photo, or maybe it's my monitor, but I think I see a few tiny nicks in the eagles wings and a couple of minor imperfections in the obverse fields. Not very much, but with the higher standard they seem to hold gold to versus silver/copper/clad coins, it's probably enough to hold it down. How many times have you resubmitted it?

Two times...you are correct about what you see...however for a "late date" 1929-1932 they are much more tolerant of bag marks since these dates never left the Federal Reserve vaults and stayed in bags until melted in 1934. I'm not shocked..more disappointed.

  • I have an 11-D that 65's everytime. It is, imo, a PQ66. It has it all, I feel your pain.

    Here's a 1931 ms66...look at the cuts on the obverse...that's the bag-marks I referred to...but THIS graded a 66.

SaintGuru: I bet it's that slight bit of rub (or stacking mark) on Miss Liberty's left thigh (viewer's right) as well as on her breast and stomach area that keeps her a very beautiful MS-65...

You know Stuart, I hate to sound defensive but all that is, is the dusting off of the frost...it's got to be the tiny scratches in the fields, but once again, for a late date that is nothing. Anyway I bought it right, it's appreciated 25% in two months and numerous collectors are looking for one of these and they can not be found!! These are so undervalued in ms65..there are less of the 29's than 1931 or 1931-D yet they are 10-15K higher. This should balance out shortly, so I can't fret about owning this great looking coin.

    Thanks.

That 29 is very nice, full blazing frost. Seems like the latter Saints were some of the best made. Love the color of the 1931. Clearly a better coin than the 29. What's the pop reports of the 31?

BTW, about one month ago I held in my hands a raw 1921 that I graded MS66. No, not a typo. It looked like a modern gold eagle it was soooooo perfect.

Only submitted it twice!! I just crossed a $10 no motto 0-mint Eagle and it took me 7 times and the last submission was on a free collectors club submission, and that is after HRH told me at the Long Beach show that it would not cross!! Sometimes it takes patience!!image

  • that is, is the dusting off of the frost

That's still breaks in the frost and I think it would hold it at 65. Just my opinion though. The marks in the field are a little more than I'd like to see on a 66 but the strike is ultra sharp and the color is very nice. Awesome coin.

    Seth,

POP is 7, 1 higher. So what is the disposition of this uuber 1921?? That's a pretty high flyer, but a 66...it would have to be perfect!! Get it,Dude!! Or PM me where it can be found???image

Both of these coins have their strenghts, but the 1931 has a creamy texture that is tantalizing!

  • Hey, no tears! It's still a sweet coin. I love them all frosty like that!

That 1929 Saint is a great coin and I sure don't need to tell you how tough it is in high grade but the 1931 is IMO much nicer based on the images. The 31 is killer! You must have one hell of a collection building with coins like these. I would love to see more images of your Saints.image

Late dates are fantastic...alsa I only have 3, but they are good uns. Here is a 1931-D ms64...the color is lost, but its very pink over 75% of the center with green periphery!! Loooks like a piece of candy!

I get angry when I see this sort of stuff. There is NO WAY this is an MS64 but the other one you showed is a MS66. That is ludicrous. Both look upper end MS65 to me.
It is supposed to be ONE standard for all coins but I see this all the time. The standard changes depending on the coin series.
Check an MS66 state quarter next to an MS66 Morgan, both PCGS graded. The state quarter will always look several grades better than the Morgan but both will be an MS66. It really irritates me to see this sort of thing. Unfortunately, until GOD himself starts grading coins...it will always be this way.

I'm not upset...the 31 doesn't show why it's a 66...the surfaces look like SILK...it's the only late date I've seen like it!! It is fantastic..irregardless of the few hit that are so prevalent in these dates. The 31-D does have a few too many cuts in the eagle to grade 65..it will not upgrade IMO, and I think ALL my coins should!!

    Thanks.

I would say the 1931 is a slightly better piece than the 1929, but not by much, the 1929 looks like a strong 65. I wouldn't get too hung up on PCGS grades, they can change at any time, I once had a 23-D go from a 64 to a 66.

PS: I'm from Wilmette / Winnetka too.

This happens all too often. That is the problem.
An upper end MS64 regrading MS65 is not big suprise....but 64 to 66 and a 66 10 years ago now grading 68..etc.etc...that is bullsh*t. Plain and simple. Money is the root of all evil. So true.....

Franky the 1931 IS a slight bit better, ergo the ms66. But the 1929 is a PROUD lookin' coin! Miss 1929 was a swinger too. 1931 was a downer year!!image

Oh...I am NOT complaining...but wouldn't a 66 look better?? Actually I am satisfied that it really isn't a 66. There are only 2, one of which was the Price coin, which was as spectacular a late-date as they come...this is not close to it...but I will call it a very PG ms65.

    Thanks for the compliment.image
