Fleer Jewish baseball players set

Fleer corporation has printed a player set of all the Jewish major league
baseball players of all time. They are being sold by a man in New England.

My dad bought a set for 85.00 recently off of ebay. If you type in Fleer Jewish on
ebay you will see the bids over 100.00

So if you are interested in a set, then you can simply contact the person
in New England to save some money.

The set includes cards of some players that do not have any major
league cards at all, but did play in the major leagues. Of course, the set
includes players like Koufax, Shawn Green, Hank Greenberg, Ron Bloomberg,
Ken Holtzman, and others.

Comments

  • I got to thumb through this set while visiting the house of a friend/trading buddy earlier this year. I actually enjoyed looking at the players. There were several I knew as being Jewish (Koufax, Greenberg, Shawn Green and Moe Berg), some I didn't think about but would have realized by their names alone (like two Yankees I watched as a kid...Ken Holtzman and Ron Blomberg). Then there were a few that surprised me.

Knowing Adam Sandler's "Channukah Song" by heart, I was surprised to see that Rod Carew was not included. And Elliott Maddox made me stop and think...I actually let loose the old saying: "Funny, he doesn't look Jewish..." Perhaps he converted.

Carew's wife is Jewish he is not.

BTW -- Fleer put out a very cool 4-card set there.
  • I can't find the Jewish Fleer set listed, but I did see a Fleer Dutch Banking Conspiracy set with the same players. I need the Antwerpian Chasidic Diamond Merchants with the game used yarmulke sub-set in PSA 9s if anyone has them.

Also, I'm waiting for the Fleer Jewish Basketball set with Jerry Sloan in 44 different poses.

I think Carew converted to Judaism and I think Ron Cey might have too. His wife, Fran, is Jewish. Ron almost talked Jimmy Wynn into converting, but the circumcision aspect was a dealbreaker. Gabe Kapler is Jewish with a huge Jewish star tattooed on his leg. I think that might be some type of oxymoron, because his Jewish pride will forbid him from being buried with his people.

The Dolphins have 1 and a half Jewish quarterbacks with Fiedler and the third stringer.

The Jews had a bunch of decent boxers back in the pre-1950 days. Besides Max Baer and Sammy Cohen, I don't know their names, but there were quite a few. However, these were the immigrant Jews or sons of the immigrant Jews. They were a much tougher breed. They didn't grow up with comedy writing as an alternative so they had to find something else.

Now, today's young hebrews can look to windsurfing as the next area of Jewish domination.

However, Koufax was the greatest pitcher of all time. He also respected the Jewish holidays. Greenberg was great. However, Koufax has fueled the dreams of every little Jewish boy growing up. Although, we usually don't grow to be more than 5 foot 9 inches, are covered with a heavy coat of hair which makes pitching during the summer difficult and have no muscles, we can always pretend we're Sandy Koufax. Oddly, he was the worst announcer of all time. Verbal skills are usually a Jew's forte.
Koufax really was a one-off. I recommend buying his cards. Jews will always have money and want a piece of the great lefty.

We can take pride in other great Jewish sport figures like Art Modell, Al Michaels, Bruce Fleisher, the two-born again golfers Hatalsky and Pavin and Dr. Cary Middlecoff.

    Best,

    S.

Hank Greenberg was the man who went through what Jackie Robinson did from the ignorant. He was great, served our country and came back to baseball for some more anti-semetic licks.

Koufax greatest pitcher of all time??? No way. A great pitcher, assumingly admired as described, but only the greatest pitcher in his sound-bite time of less than a decade. He was the most unreal pitcher on the planet for his greatest, devastating 5 year run. No doubt, most dominant pitcher in that snippet, but his career numbers are not significantly better than Ron Guidry. Regards.
Proud of my 16x20 autographed and framed collection - all signed in person. Not big on modern - I'm stuck in the past!
  • Dirty Harry,

Interesting analysis about Sandy Koufax and Ron Guidry.

Who would you consider the top three pitchers of all time ?
Would Steve Carlton be on that list ?
If not, where would Carlton fall.

    Another great analysis about Greenberg.
I couldn't believe when I heard reports about last years soccer
match between Isreal and another country where fans in the stands
made Hitler like remarks towards the Israeli national team.

My dad tells me there is still a lot of anti-semetism in Europe.

America has been the safest place for Jews in the history of the world.
But your point about Greenberg is true to a point. However, there were some major
leaguers who got in the face of people who taunted him. Same holds
true for Robinson. He had some brave souls stand up for him too.

It's nice to see that anti-Jew, anti-black, or even anti-Christian
people are on the decline in this country since the Greenberg/Robinson era.

Unfortunately to me it appears that anti-Christianity ranks first in this
    country now.

Anyway, I would be interested to hear your comments on the greatest
pitchers of all time, because I don't know the pre-60's pitchers very well.

Would Clemens and Carlton break the top ten ?

  • I need only 3 cards out of this set : Al Rosen, Ross Baumgarten, and Steve Rosenberg are all former Gators. If anyone knows of someone breaking up a set, PLEASE let me know. Thanks!

I have heard both sides on Carew. I have seen a picture of him with a "chi" (Jewish symbol) on his necklace so I assume he must have actually converted or at least "adopted" his wife's religion!? On the NBA cards joke above, don't forget Grunfeld, Dolph Schayes, Danny Schayes and now David Bluthenthal ("doesn't look it" but born a J). I do not know if Ron Cey converted but his son is a J. What happened to him? He was in the A's organization a few years ago. Also, for Dodger fans, I heard Yaeger is a J. As for Kapler (grad of Taft High in LA like Robin Yount) I believe Jewish cemetaries are more forgiving on bodily desicration now.
