Proof Set Questions (with regards to breaking them out for grading)

Good morning All,

Ok, Im a bit new to the Registry Forum and Ive been out of the coin collecting for a while though Im coming back in...slowly...

I have a few questions...
1st. I see many here breaking out coins from proof sets.. What is the best way to do this without taking to much risk in coin damage.. Im talking the hard Plastic Cases... I take it you can't just send the whole case to have them grade the coins...

2nd. I have currently a ( In My opinion ) nice 90, 92 and 2003 Proof sets.. Are any of these sets worth while to break send to get graded? I know pics would be good here.. But in general would it be even worth the effort.

3rd. Ive been looking locally at proof sets from the very late 50's through the early 60's ( 58-64) these seem to be running about 10-20 per set.. would it be a good idea to say snap up the nicest ones and perhaps break these out and send to grade.. and are any yrs. better than others that I should concentrate on? Would Mint sets be any better or worse to explore....

I know these are probably overly generic at this point.. and I suppose Im just gauging what would be worth while to try to focus on...
Ive been looking at the grading standards and other registry sets and reading as much as possible from the PGCS site... but I was curious so thought I would ask..

Thanks in advance...

If you have interest in proof sets from the 50's and 60's, learn about them before you buy. Some are run of the mill (both with or without tarnishing/carbon spots/blemishes/hairlines or other detriments to the coins) and some are PQ (premium quality) with cameo effects on the coins (some collectors are nuts for cameos, me included). Varios books and articles exist on the subject. One cameo dealer, Rick Tomaska, has published a great book on this topic. He has a website (R&I Coins) which you can check out.

In addition to proof sets, during 1956-67 Special Mint Sets (SMS sets) were made (since the mint did not make proof sets during those years. SMS sets are also very interesting. Many are junk and some are PQ with cameos.

Have fun and welcome to the forums.

Yes you can, but you have to submit all the coins.

  • Aah well if that is the possibility.. I would rather
submit the whole case if I felt the group as a whole would
    warrant grading..~~ thanks....
