How hard can it be to find a nice, circulated Barber quarter?

I've been looking for a 1916 barber quarter in VF-30 to AU-50 for two years. In that time I've seen lots of AG to VG coins, a few "VF" coins on eBay that were no better than Fine, one AU-58 in an ICG slab, and a number of MS-63+ coins. I finally went back and bought one I saw at the beginning of my quest.

I held out for two years thinking I'd find a nicer AU, but the one I got had stayed at the same store. The scan came out poorly, so it looks like there's no detail left on the shield (there is).

There are 1916-D's all over the place in VF and XF. Why is the 1916-P so tough?

  • If it looked really nice, I'd have gone for the ICG coin and crossed it. I just wouldn't have paid AU58 money for it.

  • I sort of think that during the time these were made, there was little interest in collecting them.
Thus you have the worn used ones and the not so common collected pristine examples from those few collectors who collected them.
But not much for coins in between.
So the coins wound up being used for money by everyone.

Very hard. The Barber series, in general, is very underrated in VF30 TO AU whatever. Laugh if you want to but it is true...

dunno if the philly coin is particularly scarce, but i do know that the 1916-d barber quarter is remarkably common in mid-grades. easy to cherry-pick the omm, too.

Barbers have long been one of the most abused series in terms of cleaning/dipping. "Premium Quality BU" as some would say.
    All glory is fleeting.

Don't take no for an answer! Be obnoxious until HRH agrees to recognize this variety in a PCGS slab!

It's almost as rare as the Pissing Minuteman.
