whats going on with the 1996-W PCGS MS68FB Roosie?

StoogeStooge Posts: 4,668 ✭✭✭✭✭
Recently there has been a few eBay auctions (3 x's) where this 1996-W PCGS MS68FB has sold for or had bids near $1,000.

The pop was 16 when I bought mine back in the day right after the FB designation for a 1/4th of the price and then later it sat at 19 for 6 months, when there wasn't a single one for sale anywhere. Now I see the pop just jumped to 34.

Is this a price adjustment or some insane ebayors bidding crazy money?

    Paul: My 2 cents:

You simply can't buy the coins at the old levels anymore. Which, is a good thing in a sense, as it is always nice to see upward movement in certain moderns to go along with downward movement in other moderns.

But, prices are certainly not at the $1,000 level yet for MS68FB coins either. I currently have a few in stock and have offered them to board members well under that level.

    Wondercoin,
As I'm sure your aware of, one sold on eBay for an astounding $997.00, which all of the sudden is hundreds above the highest amt. I have ever seen one sell for. Then you listed one for a reasonable paltry $775 give or take a few bucks, then some on else listed one for sale with a BIN around 1K with the rest of the 1996 mint set, and received bids up to $899.

Basically what I was asking was is this a continuing trend for this coin. Could it turn out to be a $2,000 coin in another year.

    we will see...

I just sold my MS68 ( graded before the FB was given out ) Buyer definitely believes as I do the coin will FB. Lets just say I was paid very well for the coin with the buyer paying before he sent it off to PCGS without any guarantees and the buyer taking all the chances.

I think when there is a coin that hasn't had a sale in a long time demand builds. Finally when one gets put up for auction you get two or three people who need it and are afraid they won't get another chance to buy it. Then they pay more then they might otherwise pay. What usually seems to happen next is that more come on the market and the price drops right back to where it started. My guess is that after these guys get their coins it'll be a $500 coin or less. The 1996-W Dime will always be a popular coin because it's needed for type sets but as you can see from the population report it's not the scarcest.

Paul: This is all true (including the fact I sold one as well BIN on ebay for $800 last week as well). However, IMHO, I do not believe the trend is to $2,000 in another year on this coin as you asked. Just my opinion and to back up my opinion, I am selling coins now under the $1,000 level you mentioned. Obviously, if I truly believed the coin would be $2,000 in another year, I wouldn't be selling now at under 1/2 the price. But, I do believe the coin has finally received the respect and recognition it deserves and that if an MS69FB was ever graded, it might become one of, if not, THE, most valuable clad Roosies in the entire series to date. Assuming that is the case, MS68FB's might also drift even higher as the undergrade specimens. Again, just IMHO image

The last one I saw is in tonight's (09/06) teletrade auction. It ends with $700+juice. Definitely, it is not a $1000 coin.

The 96W Dime in MS68FB made a respectable appearance tonight on TT. $770 in the holiday evening auction was very respectable I believe. In fact, I thought that was a "bullish" sign on the issue considering of late TT has not sported $500-$1,000 clad Roosies (some may recall the thread where a pop 1 clad Roosie recently sold on TT for next to nothing).

Obviously, -1- TT auction does not make a trend.

OT: In tonight TT, I did see a 1997P nickel PCGS MS69FS (no an SMS). The last bid is $20,000. This is even more respectable image
