I say that is some great target toning and a kick-ass proof

Very nice toning and if these are artificial colors my hats off to the coin Doctor for doing such a great job.

  • Hi,
that looks fully original from here - well preserved target toned 19th Century Proof. While the reverse looks a tiny bit unusual to me, it is almost certainly just...unusually beautiful!

Some of the earlier seated coins have done a phenomenal job toning. While the proofs are far more likely to target tone, here's a nice example of target toning that I've got:

As a lesson, notice in both how the colors blend from one to the next. One of the biggest giveaways of AT (except end-roll toning) is a sharp change in color--naturally, since color is based usually on the distance a part of the coin is from the source of toning, the color changes smoothly from one to the next.

I dont like how the colors repeat on the reverse.

There's a reason that proof seated dollar is not in a PCGS nor NGC holder.

don't misunderstand me - i don't think the coin's got natural toning, nor is it all that appealing. but if YOU like it, then the coin's "ok".

I dont like how the colors repeat on the reverse.

I had the same thought- isn't it suspicious that it has a double ring on the reverse? I wonder if the colors have been enhanced in the pic.....

AT...toning is "floating" too much, IMO.

I tend to be suspicious when both sides of the coin have toned similarly and nearly to the same degree. Usually one side or the other was much more exposed to the elements that cause toning.

    Hi,
this is what I meant in my earlier post. The doubling of the color pattern. After thinking about it I am going with AT. Obverse color os floating as noted.

  • Well it does look pretty good.
If it was in something like a Dansco Album, it could target tone on both sides pretty well.
The ultimate question though is whether PCGS would slab it or not, only one way to find out.
    Wouldn't that be fantastic then.
    Tough call.
