It is good to have two good web sites. You never know, this site might crash for a few hours and we do need a back up place.

  • I like the cointests across the street. I still check in over there, but my computer goes to slow poke mode there. There's allot more posting and info here by far.

  • Yeah, I went over there, too. This place rocks a lot more.

A lot less noise over there. You make a thread here and it sinks off the first page in 15 minutes, usually due to someone making iniating 2 or 3 threads with the same old tired refrain of look at this ebay auction.

I've been on there for a few years as well but I don't post anymore. Too much time and trouble to post in two places.
  • I hang out over there.....I agree with michael that there are a lot of good folks over there. It is slow, but as stated.....my threads seem to hang around a lot longer so there is a trade off.
  • goose3goose3 Posts: 11,471 ✭✭✭
I read the threads over there often but usually don't do much posting to speak of. I have always thoroughly enjoyed TomB and Michael's posts (as well as some others that don't post here anymore or much at all)

I would go there more often and post but the boards run VERY slow (not in terms of posts and threads) and I find that somewhat annoying. Maybe there is some setting in my preferences that would help that?

I've been lurking the NGC forum for two years and have been a member for at least a year though I've not once posted to a thread.

I'm the ulitmate lurker; 0 posts.
Buyer and seller of vintage coin boards!
  • I joined there too. Name username. This one's far easier to navagate. I haven't yet posted there either.

you only get out of something what you put into it

and then add a good attitude and knowledge and responsibility and i think with this combo you would get lots out of the ngc forums

if not with the above then you will be extremely disappointed

this is the crux of the matter

Of course, one PCGS glitch, problem, or goofup (real or perceived) and sleepy hollow turns into Mordor.

I post at NGC regularly as do several other experienced, knowledgeable and generous numismatists. As others have already pointed out, there are far fewer posts at NGC, however, it is still an excellent site. Similar to some experiences mentioned, I thought that their software was not as intuitive as the PCGS software, but after using it for a little while I actually have come to believe that it is slightly more user friendly. I especially like to be able to click on a thread and be taken to the exact post that I had last read. Also, even if I clean out my internet cache files, the system knows what threads I have read and what threads are new. There is a certain level of derision that is obvious among a number of the PCGS members towards the NGC board and I honestly do not know why there should be any. Having two viable coin boards is far superior to the alternative of having only one. Similarly, having two vibrant, respectable TPGs is much better than having only one. Those who agree should give the NGC boards an honest chance; not to replace the PCGS boards, but to augment them.

Michael and TomB are correct in what they say. I enjoy both boards and particapate on both. I think open minded collectors can enjoy both boards.

Take the normal bias against 'other' forums and then add in the bias against 'other' grading services and kaboom! image Same reasons for a lot of the bias over there of over here.

I too lurk the NGC boards and gain knowledge from them too.

I post on both, but much less so over there. The main reason I'm not there much is the blatant hatred shown by some of the posters toward PCGS and David Hall. If someone here did that toward NGC or Mark Salzberg, they'd be run out of town [btw - where is WallStreetMan these days?], but over there it's accepted as common behavior. I find that unacceptable and thus choose to spend less time there.

I think TDN has a legitimate point about the venom posted by one member at NGC. If anyone other than Greg posts in that manner, then I am forgetting them, as I am coming up blank. Greg can be over the top and can be repetitive on that topic to the point of being boring. He has a valid gripe, as far as I can tell, but he certainly might be better off taking it down a notch.

Russ, are there others who routinely badmouth PCGS? That's an honest question; I'm not trying to trap you and I don't know the answer.

I don't know what happened to my post. It didn't seem to take so I came back to try again and then there were two of them! I edited out the second one, this one, as it was repetitive.

Yes, of course there are. For a recent example that comes to mind, check the thread over there congratulating TDN for winning the grading contest. It made it to about the 7th or 8th post before one of the regular bashers jumped in to comment that the win was meaningless. There are plenty more examples. It isn't just Greg.

I completely agree that the place across the street is aptly nicknamed "sleepy hollow", but that is precisely the reason I prefer that place to over here. I dislike spending too much effort finding the threads I wish to read. There are very few numismatically-oriented threads here or there that I am drawn to, but moreso there than here.

I also agree that there are several members across the street who are quick to comment negatively about this place. Several folks there have been banned by the mods of this site, so I expect a certain degree of resentment. There is one poster whose ID I forget who is very much over the top about his comments about this place. Mostly, though, I tend to filter out those comments automatically and try to get to the good stuff.

Most of all, I agree with Michael and TomB that you get out what you put in (apply this to any situation) and that it's a bit odd to shun an entire message board community (with many familiar members) simply because of a few. This place isn't perfect either... (No place is!)

Finally, I find both site's software to have good points and bad. I tend to like the feel of this software more, but I think both sites can exhibit pronounced slowness -- like just now when I tried to reply to this thread.

All in all, it doesn't matter one bit in the grand scheme of things where you post, or if you post at all. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. Give me my coins, and don't let them rust. image

Yep... after the reception that everyone got at the NGC site the last time the PCGS site went down I think everyone should just run over there and wake the place up.....image

Truthfully though there are some very good posters there and there are some very lousy, hateful and vengeful posters also. The latter just plain wrecks the place.

What I find comical about this entire debate is a couple of things, most of the folks who post over there post here too. So remember when you criticize that board you are criticizing this one too. In the two years plus time I have been on both boards I can tell you unequivically that there is a 100 time more criticism of PCGS here than across the street. One of the posters here just started a thread recently on his believes that TPG's were biased toward certain submitters. Hypocrisy anyone?image Very few of the poster much care what happens here. We ought to realize we ain't all that important in their lives.

What I really find comical is that the most vocal critic of the board across the street is someone here who constantly is fighting it out here. What he fails to tell everyone is that his behavior isn't tolerated across the street. He tried his tired act there and got ran out of Dodge. He's like the little kid you used to send over to the neigbors house ( the one that you disliked) to start a fight and then comes running back here to whine about how bad they are, which of course he always exaggerates. Just wanted to post this so the individual realizes that we know the game he's been playing for two years and how tiring its gotten. Grow up and move on.

I've got to say that I really enjoy both boards. Having TWO forums is an even greater way to share knowledge and commaraderie. Why would you limit your numismatic library to only one book? No doubt about it, the more the merrier.....
