Do You Think This Piece is Undergraded?

Those are very light scuffs in the obv. field and look much worse in the pic, the lustre is superb.

  • I'm guessing that the large, prominent scuff on the left field of the obv held her back
  • Nice coin, but it doesn't seem undergraded to me as it appears another cartwheel did a cartwheel in front of her face!
  • The coin is real nice but it will probably be a tough sell getting it upgraded. I had a similar SL half, perfect except for a major hit by the rim, sent it in 3 times and could not get it past 64.

Its worth the cost of a couple of tries though.

Well....if only that large, long mark wasn't in front of her face. (if only--if only--if only). IMHO, it's a 66 without it.image

  • Might be a 66 or 67 if not for the scuff marks. I wouldn't bother with a resubmission.

Is the mark as pronounced as the photo depicts?

the cheek looks 67, however the placement of that mark in a prime focal area -- left field, is enough to keep it out of a 66 imo, however I'm no expert by any stretch. Perhaps if the mark was on the reverse you'd have a shot at 66.

    nice coin.

Considering the length and placement of that mark in the left obverse field, I don't see it making it past a 65...

    that mark is distracting to me. i'd say it's a ms-67 net-graded to ms-65.

    also, it's awful white, digi-pic?

I believe that coin should be in a 66 holder.

Properly graded and probably has more marks than can be seen in the pic.

  • Light or not, the marks are there.

I'll bet there are other reasons the coins an MS65 as well.

If it graded MS65 at pcgs with that big mark it must be truly outstanding in all other respects- and it looks that way from the picture. I don't think a grade means much on a coin like this because to sell it sight unseen you would have to disclose that mark and it would scare most away. I personaly find original coins like this very acceptable- more so than coins with relatively hidden flaws such as light cleaning or patches of hairlines that make up the mainstream of MS65's. mike image

No. The above coin is one of the reasons I don't do MS.

To me a 65 is (or at least was) considered "investment" grade. As such, there should be no major distractions in primary focal points. I don't know about anyone else, but to me that mark is not only major but also in a major focal point. Therefore IMO this coin cannot grade higher than 64.

Now note that while I might grade it 64, what one would pay for such a piece is quite a different matter IMO.

I actually think it is overgraded. The mark in front of the face is very distracting. MS64.

That's a big hit in the field in front of the face. While the coin might make 67 on a good day without that mark, I think it's lucky to make 65 with it.
  • I think the scuff mark detracted too much.
MS65 looks like a good grade to me.
