help

need some help with this.
on the vintage board this card was offered for sale. i spoke with the seller on the phone and agreed on a price and that he would ship it c.o.d. now i have been looking at pics to determine the authenticity and everything seems to check out except the font on the back (topps baseball) but i know there are two variations. i am going to try to upload but if i cant i would like to be able to email the scans to someone for a second opinon. also with c.o.d can you cancel a cert. check if the package does'nt check out ? if not what are my options for secure payment ?
regards,
aloof

i am trying to get pics up but not having much luck.image

  • hey pandrews,
no , at least not yet.
i need some expert opinons on it as i said he agreed to c.o.d it to me but i'm having trouble deciding if its legit or not.
do you have any thoughts? or can i email you the scans since i still have not been able to upload. i seem to be tech challenged if you know what i mean.

  • the how to spot a fake site has a ton of info and most issues seem to check out, except for the variations. this card seems to have some of both things to look for in a real card, and that is what worry's me. also the ability to stop payment on a certified check after the c.o.d transaction.

some guy came on yesterday his first post was that he was selling a 52 mantle in VG grade................i guess the ebay scammers found us if i was u id stay away from that deal.
    Good for you.
  • the card is a 52 topps mantle.
and i should stay away even though it will come c.o.d ???????????

  • COD will protect you if you use a check.. you can always stop the payment if it is not real.. If i was you, i would find some shops around you that deal in vintage cards.. the same day you get the card, have itr checked by a COUPLE of dealers.. if it looks shady, simply cancel the check and notify th seller that the card is on its way back.

How much did you buy it for? if you have a scan, email it to me at crottsfamily@netzero.com and i will post it on here for you.
  • A few observations:

    1) Fedex does not do COD.

    2) United States Postal Service has a $1,000.00 max on COD.

    3) UPS has a $50,000.00 max on COD but the shipper can specify payment type (ie. Money Order, Cashiers Check, Bank Check, etc.-cash is not accepted).

I'm not sure what he is asking but if it is over $1,000.00 you may want to think long and hard. I've never tried to cancel a MO, CC, or BC without having the original check in hand. You could be S.O.L. image

Aloof would describe anyone who purchases this type of raw card from anyone that wasn't a well referenced business!

    Loves me some shiny!
  • i guess it is a chance, but the bank said a $ order through them can have a stop payment applied up until its cashed and even after that i have my c.c protection(purchased with visa).
by the way i asked Josh Alpert (A761506)" who has the mantle verification site his opinion and at least on the 52 it looks good certainly a possible psa 4.
i'll let everyone know how it turns out.

sorry psa 2 not 4, wishful thinking on my part.

  • Here are the scans he provided.

if its real (i dont have a clue) it looks like a PSA 3

edit - i just noticed some paper loss (i think) on the back in the word "during" which would knock it down to a 2..

  • thanks brian,
    we agreed on 2k for the 51 & 52 the 51 looks like a 2 also.
    hopefully there both legit.image

  • well i p/u the cards about 2 hrs ago. so far so good the last thing josh said to check was the black borders and the printed name, and they both check out fine. the 51 bowman looks like it should grade a 4 or 5 and these i have some experiance with as i just completed the set minus the mays and mantle. i will be sending these in for grading soon and will keep everyone abreast of the results.
