Fake $5 indian on eBay?

I was looking on eBay and noticed a raw $5 indian that looked suspiciously fake; its colour seemed to be off. Plus the sellers feedback sucks..what do you think?

Here's the link.

I think it's more in how the pic was taken. It doesn't strike me at first glance as being fake. Definitely circulated and possibly cleaned.

Could it be fake? Sure.... but it's not hard to miss the color of a gold coin.

Tell me, what coin have you seen, slabbed or not slabbed, that hasn't arisen suspicion?

No reason I can see to assume it's fake. I don't understand the concern about the feedback. Having said that, $199 is too high a starting bid, but that's a separate issue.

I see nothing to think it's fake, just too much to pay.

Not a good enough picture to tell much. I would assume it's real. mike

    I agree w/darktone to wit...

You definitely need to look closer for things like:

    bad necklace stippling
    lumps around date
    tooling at back of neck
    tooling marks
    other things

But, you are correct in being suspicious because though being off-color is not alone damning, it certainly begs that you look at the things mentioned above w/a loupe so...you can't tell from here and that is certainly as good a reason as you should need to not buy raw gold when you can't see the coin's detail! If you are buying raw gold with out being able to look at it closely it is only a matter of time.

    Another point about the color...

Gold is one of the most difficult colors to capture, especially if the white balance isn't metered. Since auto-white balance (or just setting to a type of light) corrects most heavily for yellow, gold, which is a yellow, is heavily hit by the effect. Thus, it's hard to blame someone for having an off-color gold coin in a picture... then again, this is what gold should look like image:

Ahh, sweet gold. I miss my gold. Sold most of it last fall. Only have two small coins left. Can't wait for gold to plummet so I can buy again.

    Huh?

He satisfied his customers 99.6% of the time. That's pretty good in the real world.

    • I've bought from him before and he's OK.
    • It looks OK to me.
But there is a risk the coin mayhave been cleaned though.
Cameras have to be set just right to get the gold color, but it does look like it's copper though.

this dealer is doing 1,000 coins a month....how much time do you really think he is spending on pics etc.....why you should say his feedback sucks is beyond me, I looked at 20 pages of positive feedback and saw one negative from a guy who did not receive a $15 dollar coin...with this kind of volumn probably 1 got lost in mail....... really a shame that you post a thread like this...image

Darktone...I'm studying fakes in that series right now and would love more detail on the numerals (the field behind them) and the neck/necklace and...if I could see the arrow head bundle, at the end to the edge of the coin. Don't know how to repay you, maybe when I get my camera thing together better I could post a little bit better coin flicks and you could enjoy that. And...just what is going on with his chest??? Thanks for considering this.

hammerman, sorry but I sold this coin to a fellow forum member on the BST forum a while back and the only picture I could find was in that thread. I had a couple of counterfiet gold coins I used to let forum members look at but I sold them when the price of gold went upimage. Next time I get one I'll let you know. mike

Why would anyone FAKE a 09-P $5 Indian. It's just an XF/AU piece....no big deal.

I've got a few pics of Mike's fake gold coins he sent me. If I get a chance I'll post them.

gcl- I agree with everyone else, in that there wasn't any significant evidence for you to post a thread about the coin being a fake.....
