Here's a new one for me - seller ships US Mint box with empty capsules and no coins *RESOLVED*

I bought a 2001 American Buffalo Set from a seller who had 3 listed.

I paid with PayPal and I received the package today (with delivery confirmation). No sign of tampering and when I opened it up there is the box with two empty coin capsules inside - no coins.

No response from the seller yet. I can see this will probably be fun.

Better go back and read the fine print out loud. A lot of folks are selling "empty" packaging.

What is the name ID of the seller who sold it to you?

Good point WaterSport, I'll check that.

Nope, the coins were in the picture

  • How much postage was on the package? Was it enough to cover the weight of the coins if they had been in there?

  • It was a home-made Priority Label from PayPal with the weight of 1 lb. 0 oz. and $3.85 postage.

  • Did the description state that there were no coins.
    Even if vague about it.

  • I'd contact the seller, then the police and Postal Inspector.
If it's an honest mistake, the seller can refund your money. If not, it's time to file a fraud charge.

Is that about the right weight and postage?

Actually that is the link were the seller got his picture. He used it here, here, and here.

After seeing that I opened a Buyers Complaint with PayPal. As soon as I clicked the "Submit" PayPal came back with the message below. (From their selections I picked "Antiques/Collectables" as the Category, and check "Yes I received the package" and "The Buyer Didn't Respond".

    Thanks PayPal image

  • Hopefully, this is an innocent mixup of some sort.

The seller has been an ebay member for 6 years, has been a buyer and seller, and
has feedback of 184 with only one neg from more than a year ago. In the past week,
they've received several positives for delivering "Absolutely beautiful" and "Sealed
    as promised" sets.

In any case, this won't be very fun unless the seller is sitting on the coins now,
realizing that he forgot to include them in "somone's" set, and is just waiting for
an email asking what's up with the missing coins?

    Good luck with this one!

  • What a bummer!! Going to the seller's own site and checking his latest feedback, you'll note that it's the same set of coins you bought - and he got a "positive" rating -

    I hope it's a mistake or oversite

I got an email from him saying he was out of the country and he sent me a refund through PayPal. image

He said he bought 3 sets off eBay and never looked inside them. I emailed Mike (docsonner) and he said the coins he got were outstanding, and the other buyer left a positive feedback as well.

So I'm no longer the fraud victim here, but it appears the guy I bought them from will be (better him then me I guess).

It's just all part of the fun when buying on eBay.

And with PayPal's automated "Declined- Go Away" response to their "Buyers Protection" I will go back to refering to them as the "weasels at PayPal". image

PS - Thanks Jay for the contact info - fortunately I didn't need it.

Somebody got screwed, at least it wasn't you. I guess this is a good lesson for everyone, always inspect your packages as soon as you receive them, and always double check what you ship out.

I hope you get your money back. I'm curious though how the seller can make the claim "no toning" if they never even looked at the coins to be sure they were there.
