Wow SGS rocks

ok just kiding...

I was going to try an experiment since I have several free submissions to use at PCGS.... so I bought 2 of the new nickels off ebay... both MS70 for about $12 total... i wanted to see what PCGS would return.....

I think im screwed now... as I dont know if I want to waste a free submission on the crap I got...... (figured I could get a 68 or so back...because SGS cant be that bad right??)

hmmm looking through the case I can see scratches onthe surface of the nickel..... HOW can a company grade something a 70 with scratches????

anyway so much for my experiment.... (still might try it...depeneding on what it looks like after i crack it open)...

funny thing is... today the guy wrote me asking for positive feedback.... I wrote him and said... no chance... and added that i wont leave negative for him because I dont want the retribution (my only two negs are from that)... but I will stay away from his coins (SGS or otherwise)

<< <i>Why not give a positive feedback? You knew it was a POS when you bought it and he delivered a POS. Dont blame the seller >>

I agree. I frequently buy garbage slabs and know full well what I'll be getting. As long as the seller delivers in a timely manner and posts feedback for me, I give them a positive.

why not leave a positive feedback??

first off....if you are selling a 70 coin.... you know better.... the pic he used was a pic he reuses... (there are no serial numbers on the case)....

i looked through the case....and could see the scratches with my naked eye....
is there ever a chance to get a 70 coin with scratches on the surface?

he knew what he was selling and made no metion of it... i wont leave negative feedback as I knew what i was getting into (as well as the neg he will leave me) but i wont leave a positive

is fair market value for the coin in ms70 $12?
  • LBGrobLBGrob Posts: 58 ✭✭
fair market value for the coins I got is ten cents.....

fair market value for the coins in pcgs70 would be much much more then $12....

my point was that SGS sucks... and dont do experiments with them....
the feedback thing was another issue.... and a personal preference when it comes to leaving it....

me as an ebay seller would NEVER sell a coin that was slabbed a 70...without letting the buyer know that there could be possible scratches on the coin... or at least include the pic of the coin.... the fact that it was a reused pic..and not that of the coin without letting me know could constitute fraud... but again... itw as $12 and i knew what i was getting into for the most part... (figured i would get a clean coin... that could get a decent grade in pcgs...but in any event a clean coin... as a 70 should be clean)

If you could see it was probably junk when you bid, and what you got was clearly what was pictured and delivered in a timely manner, there's no reason to do anything *but* positive feedback. Had they said, "This will cross at PCGS as a 69," for example, maybe their representation was bad. But it sounds like they pictured and described an SGS MS-70, and they delivered the SGS MS-70 that was described.

If the picture was good and clearly showed the scratches, I think you're being unreasonable. I don't think the seller was deceptive at all, based on what you've said in your initial post in this thread and your first reply. The seller delivered what was advertised. Period.

Isn't it about time someone holds SGS accountable for their BS grading?
  • You knew what SGS was all about, the seller delivered with no problems. Leave a positive, and don't be such a little whining baby!

On the other hand, we regularly see sellers who sell overgraded, etc., coins with sterling feedback and wonder "Why doesn't anybody ever neg these a-holes?" and "eBay feedback is worthless because people don't say what they really mean" for fear of retaliation, or whatever.

Did you try to return the coins? If the coins suck, and the seller won't take them back, maybe you do have good reason to give bad feedback. If he did offer you the opportunity, then return them, give him a positive, and quit your whiningimage

ziggy..the pic he used in the auction is not a pic of the coin i rec'd ...

when i said i looked through the case and saw the scratches that was when it was in my hand....

and manor... how would u go about going after SGS? I was thinking the same thing... that SGS should be liable for it... not really the seller (other then the fact he had an obligation to disclose all info on the coins)

It was probably just an anommaly.

You just need to buy more 70's from SGS, SEGS, ICG, NTC, ACG, etc and slab them at PCGS.

Since you'll be paying $12 a pop, and reselling for $1,000 each you'll be rich in no time at all.

Too many members of this forum waste their "free" (which actually aren't free) PCGS submissions. Don't waste yours.

Sounds to me like you were trying to get a couple of $300.00 coins off eBay for $12.00 and then got mad because they were not $300.00 coins, or even $50.00 coins at that.

If anything-it should be shame on you, not shame on the seller.

  • Aboncom strikes again. I still swear he owns SGS, with the number of slabs he sells.

    Manorcourtman,

I don't think there is anything you CAN do. SGS obviously uses a totally different grading scale than the rest of the coin community that resembles the accepted standard in appearance only. He is selling SGS 70 coins, not PCGS or NGC 70 coins. He makes no claim that they will cross. I do believe that if he is using his own grading scale, he should be forced to change his designations. Any legal minds here know if the Sheldon scale is copyrighted and if an infringement suit can be brought against SGS?? Maybe a nice class action involving everyone who ever got conned into buying an SGS slab.

I don't know why anybody would buy a SGS coin.

I agree with the majority on this.
You bought something knowing that the level of quality does not equate.
You bought it as a learning tool/experiment/rip.
Accept that. You really aren't out much.

The key here is that it sounds like the seller delivered, by the letter, what you won. Did they say the pics were OF the coins you would receive?
    Did you ask?

A recent thread mentioned a seller and asked for opinions.....Russ mentioned that the seller does not necessarily deliver the coin/sets in the auction pic. He at least ASKED first. Did you do the same?

There are a LOT of sellers that use stock pictures....most of the good ones state that, but not all do.
DHRC would sell and state they were using stock pictures...you would NOT get the coin in the pic for the most part.
    Again...did you ASK????

The seller can't force you to give feedback but I think you are being petty.......why not post a link to the auction or state who the seller was?

What about a return policy? Was one stated in the auction? Did you ask? I doubt it would be worth the shipping for $12 worth of junk coins, but if there was one and the seller was willing, then I think they deserve the positive for the transaction.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Has anybody ever seen an SGS coin that wasn't graded as a 70?? image
I'll sometimes pick up a pci, icg, or segs coin that I feel is good quality and underpriced. I won't even consider doing any cherrypicking or experimenting with SGS slabs......... image

So by some of the logic here it is totally ok to missrepresent something as long as you don't overcharge.
