1954-S Jefferson 6 full steps!

I thought this was a neat coin. It is off center and hence the steps got a good strike. It has been cleaned in the past, but still an interesting find for the right collector.

Thanks for the link. I watched one of those (maybe this same coin, who knows) go unsold in Len Roosmalen's auctions for close to a year, then finally decided to place a bid. Of course I was outbid. I guess opportunity got tired of knocking.

Also, the increase in effective striking pressure is what caused the steps to strike up fully. Elements near the edge of an off-center strike will be a bit weaker than usual as there is no collar to keep the metal flowing vertically. But elements in the center of the design will strike up better, as there is less total metal to resist the compressive forces of the strike.

Errormaven, if you read this, please translate that last bit into English for me. image

Would PCGS certify such a coin as FS (assuming the coin was not cleaned).

That's a good question. I know NGC will certify error coins as full steps.

I think there was a thread on this last week, PCGS will not give an eror coin a designation like Full Steps of Full Torch.

Its been cleaned also, so it won't get in a Pcgs holder.

I cannot believe people try to clean non proof nickels. Does anyone here dip nickels?

I learned the hard way. I dipped a 42 D/D to get some pvc off of it. Next time I will experiment on something a little less valuable. I am going to experiment with acetone on some pocket change.

I don't (God forbid), but you better believe it happens.
