Game Used Bat Cards....

Why are there never any game used Black bat cards? For example you never see a
sports cards with a black piece from a Barry Bonds SAM bat or a black piece from
Ichiro's Mizuno bat. It is always white ash (this despite the Bonds bat being Maple).
Look at the Topps 03 Tribute dual Bonds/ Ruth game used bat, the bat pieces look
like the identical same grain and wood.

I find it strange you can never get an outer black piece of bat (this obviously covers
a lot of surface area to chop into cards) when if you look at an issue like 01 SP
Legendary Cuts Joe Jackson, they didn't waste anything AND even sold the sawdust.

  • This is the eBay link to the Topps Tribute Bonds/Ruth card. eBay 5119543763.
There is almost no difference in the wood type despite one being supposedly
70 year old ash and the other from a brand new maple bat???

    Bonds/Ruth bat card
  • the bat is coated with black paint, its tan or whatever color bats are inside
  • I realize it's black paint but maple especially soaks up paint deep into the grain.
(I know, I refinished a maple guitar and it had to be painted twice).
I also realize that maple is a very light colored wood inside, but in the case of the
Bonds/Ruth card even the friggin' grain is the same.

Because they make them all from the same 2x4s and none are really bats nor have ever been near the players. It is a big $ H ! T Sandwich and we all took a bite. Same reason jerseys are made of super heavy mesh and the NBA jerseys usually have big vent holes and all the jersey cards are actually made of huge pieces of cloth made by little kids in Afghanistan. 96 and 97-98 were the only actual jersey pieces all the rest are total shams. We all got screwed.

The outside of a bat is rounded; it just wouldn't fit too well on a flat card.

I've got a 1997 Leaf Frank Thomas bat card that is from the surface. It has the silver "g S" from the "Big Stick" trademark on a black lacquer surface. In fact, the background image on the card shows the bat and you can tell it's the exact same bat from the markings. It's one of the cornerstones of my Frank collection. With only 100 of each type made, most of the 97 Leaf Frank set shows a premium piece. Every bat card I've seen is a surface piece. The jersey cards are almost all patch cards, before they were called patch cards. The sweatband and cap cards often show stitching from logos and the batting gloves usually show multiple colors of leather.

I've got other bat cards that do show a little bit of the surface. However, I believe most bats are cut in sections perpendicular to the length, and then cut square, so chances of getting a bit of the surface is small.
    WANTED:
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25
2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs

    Nothing on ebay
  • in some of the sweet spot bat barrel cards, they have the black-painted bats.

    That makes sense! Good point.
