1861 seated half AG3 rotated reverse

Can anyone tell me if rotated reverse was common for these coins? Seems I read that rotated dies were common for older coins, any comments welcome.

Rotations like that are quite minor, and as far as I know, very common... I doubt the coin would get any premium because of it--in any grade.

  • I thought I had read that somewhere but today was the first time I noticed that the reverse was rotated and I find anyting in any of my books about it.

  • Since it is rotated in the holder I would guess the actual rotation is with in the mints 15° tolerence so it would not be considered an error, also you have to get pretty close to 90° rotation before you can expect any real premium.
  • I wasn't aware that the mint had a 15 degree tol. That seems like alot ,but since I am a machinists buy trade im used to + or - 2 degrees, even less on some parts.
