Attn: lordmarcovan - a holey 1928 Peace Dollar

I was looking at 1928 Peace Dollars on eBay and saw this one coin that I think the "holey of holeys" would like...

1928 Holed Peace Dollar

  • Why would someone bid $39.00 for a crappy holed dollar?
    The world is still insane!

Maybe because they would enjoy having it?

Personally, I wouldn't either, even for a tougher date coin. But I think if we looked around, we could all find purchasing decisions which puzzle us. I can't see paying hundreds of dollars for a pop-top clad coin, for example. Others do. And maybe they don't understand why I might willingly pay MS-62 money for some of my nicer AU-58s. That's the neat thing about the coin market. There are so many different things to collect, so many different ways to collect, that there's something for everyone. There's no right or wrong way to collect as long as you educate yourself about what you're getting, and armed with that education, make an offer based on reason and desire to have the coin.

I'd want to see it in person. The coin has damage in the area where the mintmark would be on a 28-S.
  • I was looking at a Trade Dollar (holed) for about $10 more than that Peace is currently at. I didn't pull the trigger though. Almost. I wanted a slight discount, really any discount, but didn't get it so I passed.
  • That's a shame.

Would you be able to tell if it is an "S" without the mint mark there? Are there some telltale signs?

Yes. The rim of the 28-P is very distinctive. Nothing else in the series like it. From the pix, I'd say the coins probably real and a good deal.

  • What really breaks my heart is to see all the old gold coins that have been holed or soldered on to make jewelry.

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)
