Mint Sets Curiosity

Just out of curiosity: When one buys a "Mint Set" it's always Denver and
Philadelphia. Why isn't San Francisco included in the sets?

  • Because the (uncirculated) mint sets you are talking about are the coins that were made for circulation, which only come from the Denver and Philadelphia mints.

The proof mint sets (both clad and silver) are the ones that are struck at San Fransisco.

All the government issue mint sets have contained the S minted coins that were issued
for circulation that year. This includes all those before 1956, '68 to '74, and the '80 and
'81 sets. The only exception is the 79-S SBA did not appear in the '79 mint set because
the packaging was already on hand when the decision was made to strike the coins at
all three mints. This coin does appear in a couple of special souvenir sets but not the reg-
    ular souvenir set.
