Anyone ever sell a $3,000-$5,000 coin on ebay

LongacreLongacre Posts: 16,717 ✭✭✭
I was wondering if anyone has any experience with selling a coin on Ebay in the $3,000 to $5,000 price range. Did you have any problems? The fees seem reasonable, but I have never sold something that pricey and I was wondering if anyone has any advice or thoughts. Thanks.

I've sold higher than that with no problems. Just CYA on getting paid.

Do NOT accept any "unusual" conditions requiring less "hold time" on checks or shipping to different address or assuming all money orders are genuine.

And do NOT ship overseas unless you have FULL control over when to ship and COMPLETE fully understood conditions for returns (if any from overseas)

    Take ....... CARE.

That is not that much money nowadays. Used to buy a car. Now it'll fix a transmission.

edited to add: CALL their bank! Require FULL information. If bank is one that will not give out information, demand USPS money orders and cancel the sale if you detect any reticence of buyer to work with you to get info.
  • I sold a $15,000 pice of video hardware on ebay and a $7500 tape deck. Never a coin that high

Sold one in that range, several others in the $1000 to $2000 range. All $1 no reserve auctions. No problems. The PayPal fees take a good chunk, though. If you take PayPal, make sure to ship ONLY to confirmed addresses.

    Yes, no problems.

I had a $15,000 sale and had the buyer send a bank wire transfer.

I called my bank and asked if it could be reversed and she thought it was posted to my account by mistake and told me that they could reverse it and if I didn't have the money in the account, the would file a suit to recover the money.

I then talked to someone who wasn't an idiot and was told it couldn't be reversed without my permission (unless it was a mistake).

For a large sum of money I think a bank wire transfer is the best way to go.

I've bought a $35k auto on Ebay. Also, bid on coins up to $6k but was the bridemaid on those coins. I've sold coins up to $1.5k with no issues.

I've sold a few in that range without any problems. As Topstuf said, beware of special conditions and requests. Among the deals I've turned down:

"I'll give you an acura 87 for it. I live in brooklyn..let me know..thanks alex"

"Hello- I want to buy this item for my parents in philadelphia. If I win this, and I pay via paypal right away, will you be able to ship it to them the same day? Thanks Joel"

"I offer you US$XXXXX.00 for 1894 S1 RPD Indian Head Cent PCGS MS65RD including shipping with Fedex Priority mail service to below address information: Name: XXXX XXXXXX Street: Fastran Service 115 Airport Cargo Road #02-22 Cargo Agent Building C City: Singapore State or Province: Singapore Zip or Postal Code: 819466 Country: Singapore If you accept payment with Mastercard or Visa, I will send my credit card information later. I will wait for your confirmation. Regards, Otaru"
  • I have sold a few coins in that price range, and here are my suggestions.....

    A. Qualify bidders. (only accept bidders with a pre-approved feedback percentile)
example: minimum of 25 feedbacks with a positive rating of 98% unless pre-approved by the seller before bidding.

    B. If you have a very good feedback percentage as a seller, don't accept paypal. Most buyers don't mind paying for an Item in advance as long as it is a good seller.

    C. Make sure your description is as complete as possible, and make sure the buyer has NO surprises.

    Shylock,

Did that last one offer to throw in a genuine Trade Dollar as a bonus?

  • I have sold 2 coins in that range, and everything went smoothly. I did request that the buyers NOT use Paypal cuz the fees are pretty hefty...but both checks cleared and coins were sent afterward....I believe that I sent both registered mail just to be extra safe.

  • I sell $3-5k coins on eBay at least 2 times a month with no problems.

They wire, I ship registered mail.

My highest eBay single coin sale was $44,200 back in Dec. 2002.
  • I've done a couple. The fees seem high to me. eBay does nothing different when I sell a cheap coin but they end up with much more. Oh well. I did make it clear that I wouldn't accept PayPal and it seemed to work out fine.

I have a few times. I accepted Paypal each time. No problems. I send the coins registered Insured. Also try to establish a dialog with your buyer and save all correspondence.

As an added note, anything done with Fedex is NOT covered by any "mail fraud" statutes.

I think there are enough post offices to serve everybody. Of course, "Mr. Bigbuxx" is a "busy" man and has his own Fedex acct so he MUST use Fedex.

On someone ELSE'S coin, he can.

It surprises me to see how many think that "registered" mail is something .....SPECIAL.

It should be a matter of habit for coin shipments of any size.

"Insured" can be a booger to collect......sometimes.

I sent a group of circ dollars once and the post office balked because when I showed them the invoice (which you gotta do) they wanted my cost basis on EACH coin.
The thing went on to such an extent that I called my congressman and got the reimbursement pronto.

Maybe registered can be tough too, although the requirement for postal employees to have their NAME on each possession of the piece is a deterrent to theft. Especially with gummint retirements so juicy.

I agree with Relayer. For large sums a bank wire is safe and simple. I have purchased coins using wire transfer and it went smoothly.

Edited to add: never purchased through E-bay though

Never had a problem, now where is my wifes headimage
  • A couple of questions about bankwires...

Does the bank usually have a fee for this service?

Do you need to give the buyer the/your account info to which to send the $$$?

Isn't there some risk in giving out your account info?
