Secon chance offer from Ebay????

Has anyone heard of this before, A second chance offer from a seller on Ebay? I was recently offered a coin which I bid on maybe 2 months ago and didn't win, in fact I was the 3rd from high bidder. The seller is ofering it to me at my last high bid, which is a few hundred less then the winning bid and $150 less then the second high bid. He only will accept payment from western union, and claims to have some type of a security account with Ebay where he has $20000 in a special Ebay account in case he does not ship the coins he has listed. I don't know, but it all sounds kinda fishy to me. Like to hear if anyone knows about these second chance Ebay offers, if there is such a thing????

Yes there are 2nd chance offers, but those go through eBay and have an auction number you can look up.

    Yours is just a scam.

I've had a few opportunities for second chance offers. Ebay has it so that the seller can offer you something that you bid on. Maybe the seller had more than one of the same item or the original winning bidder couldn't pay/returned the item/ etc.

The details of your event, as mentioned, does sound like a scam.
  • I get these all the time too, but western union only, I don't like it, especially the 20,000 special account thing, I would not do it. Just my 2 cents.

  • I would NEVER buy from a seller outside ebay, even if the offer is legit. If the seller got jilted by the high bidder, then they will be relisting the piece. I'd wait to see if the same coin goes back up for auction, and then bid a little higher for it than you did the last time.

  • Second chance offers are things sellers can offer if they have more than 1 offer. I sometimes offer it if the winner and #2 are close and I have more than 1 item. This way you get the coin for what you were willing to pay and then the seller does not have to do another auction. You get to leave feedback as well.

Sounds shakey to me...I wouldn't go for it.
  • Go back to the auction and use the "contact the seller" feature. Tell him that you received a "second chance" offer on the auction from him and that you want to confirm that the offer was legitimite. If it was he should say yes and you can go ahead with the deal, if he says no or you get no response then you know it was fake.

Personally it sounds to me like a fake.

I know of no such account. Anyone else?

if it sounds fishy, I would suggest you pass....the biggest rip on ebay was a seller who was good for several years....one day he flipped out....sold items big ticket...then contacted 2,3,4th runner ups and offered similiar items....took all the money and skipped the country....I dont like the Western Union part

SCAM SCAM SCAM ... I just got an offer for a lot from the Pittsburgh auction. I was topped by several floor bidders. Same type of email for a 2nd chance offer - chked out the ID - 5 days old, 1 feedback from a test auction - location France.

  • This has "SCAM" written all over it!!

The couple of second chance offers I have received link you to an eBay auction page that looks like a regular auction page only you are the only one that can bid. I suppose someone better than I am could duplicate such a page.

<< <i>Go back to the auction and use the "contact the seller" feature >>

I beleive this option disappears now when the auction is over...only the winning bidder gets the contact info.

I've purchased items like this several times without any issues. However, I've always been very very careful!

No it's still there, just go to the auction and click on ask seller a question or click on their ID and it will take you to the feedback page and there is a link there as well for contacting the person. Neither one will give YOU contact information but they will sent an messagel to the seller for you and give him your email so he can respond. That way you know that you are DEFINITELY talking to the seller and not to the possible scammer that sent you the second chance email.
  • Conder, I had to go back and check out what I had seen the other day.

It looks like the "ask seller question" option only disappears if the auction has no winner and you are right, you can contact them through the link within their feedback page.

I jumped to the conclusion that it was a change that eBay had made recently....it may have always been that way as far as I know. image

  • I've done several 2nd chance offers and off eBay deals for "minor" coins where the seller has several of the same coin that aren't committed to eBay yet with no problems. But I have never been told WesternUnion only. And, if some sort of security account is available to sellers on eBay, then why don't the sellers advertise it? I've never seen or heard of it.

  • I contacted the seller from his ID on the origianl auction. He said the coin sold and that he has not offered it in a second chance. So there ya go SCAM!!!!! lol. The guy doing the scam gave me his name and address, With Wesrtern Union I assume you need to show ID of some sort to get the wired money. So I conatacted Ebay, but all I could find is email to their security, does anyone know of a phone number where a person can call and talk to a human and not a machine? What are the odds that he gave his real name and address????
