  • eBay is like the old west.

When the authorities can't keep the peace, vigilante justice is all that is left.

Several fraudulent auctions recently have had really high bids places by 1 or 2 ID's, which I'm sure were attempts to protect the ignorant. Eventually these auctions were pulled. Keep up the good work!

Did anyone here look at the eBay Coin/Currency Watch newsgroup online there between 5:00 and 6:00 PDT? I posted a couple of comments, and saw other comments from friends here and at rec.collecting.coins.

It seems that eBay supplied only one clueless moderator to respond to about 90 posts in that hour, much livelier than a recent workshop on eBay for stamp collectors. I think that eBay's purpose for this workshop was to see if additional coin categories were requested. Instead, the automaton moderator had to answer as best as she could questions such as:

#1) Is eBay serious about enforcing their policy on auctions of blatantly overgraded coins?
#2) Is eBay serious about enforcing their policy on auctions of counterfeit coins? Why not bring in the Secret Service?
#3) How about a required category for "copies" or "counterfeits"
#4) How come complaints against PowerSellers are futile?
#5) Will the eBay police for fraudulent auctions amount more than a fox guarding the henhouse? If so will the cost of the police offset lost final value fees?
#6) Is eBay's stated alliance with the ANA more than lip service?
#7) Is it a waste of time to complain about coin auction fraud on eBay?

I have read all the posts and responses there and left thinking that eBay will not pay for the services of a knowledgeable coin authenticator or consumer protection person. I guess I'll be spending less of my coin budget on eBay and more at shows, since there is no so much to sort through in an eBay search before finding something worth bidding on.
