Found money--what coin to buy?

LongacreLongacre Posts: 16,717 ✭✭✭
I recently received about $250 that I was completely not expecting. I decided to make a coin or coin related purchase. I usually collect US gold, but I wanted to spend this "found money" on something that I would not normally buy (and maybe increase my interest in another series as well). Does anyone have any suggestions on a coin that I should seek out (and the grade as well). Or should I just bank the cash (but that is no fun). Thanks.

Something in a Texas commemorative perhaps? Just be careful, collecting classic commems can be adictive.

I agree with some of the other members:
A nice CC Morgan from 82-84 would be a nice purchase and (possibly) wise investment

How about... Buy something from the same time period as the gold coins you collect - but a different metal. If you're into the mid-1800's, a problem-free Seated dollar would be a nice complement to your set.

How nice of a seated dollar could one get for that kind of money...that sounds like a very nice idea.
  • Sample slabs. You could get 4-5 scarce ones for that price tag.

Go on a treaure hunt with the money. Go either to multiple brick and mortar stores where coins are sold [exclusively or with other items, i.e. jewelry store, pawn shop] or go to a coin show. Spend some time looking through 1950-1970 proof sets or special mint sets [or singles] and look for cameo coins. If you find any, buy the set at a regular price, cut out the cameo, set it aside, resell the non cameos and repeat until you have none of your $250.00 left.

Next. count how many cameos you have acquired and study them along with books on the topic. You will be amazed at the beauty of these coins. They are works of art. If you get hooked on this area of the hobby, start putting together cameo year sets and start upgrading your coins towards DCAM status. You will have a great time and will have a collection that is simply stunning in its eye appeal.
