Question for Morgan collectors

In order to be graded PL does the coin have to exhibit some cameo contrast or does the field just have to be reflective?

fields have to be reflective. a 1904 can be PL and have no cameo contrast for example.

As JB said. Cameo is a nice plus though.

  • Ditto on what jbsteven said. Just to add, the typical definition for a PL is a reflectivity is 4 inches and DMPL is 8 inches.
  • Were PLs and/or DMPLs first strikes, were they made by accident, or were they made intentionally?

PCGS is pretty picky about the fields having a "watery", smooth look in terms of reflectivity. They don't like a lot of die polish lines, they don't like metal flow lines, and they don't like frost in the fields.

In other words, what ANACS will call a PL just because it's all flashy and sparkly, PCGS often won't.
    When in doubt, don't.

Early, highly polished dies. As far as I know, not made intentionally.

Isn't there a scale one can use for the measure of reflectivity and PL fields? I thought I remember seeing one in the VAM book...

Yes, PL should have reflectivity of 2-4 inches. But there is some frost allowed in the fields. DMPL has 4+ inch reflectivity and no frost allowed. Must be pure mirror.

ditto what nwcs said, except 6+ inches for dmpl at pcgs.

Could someone please post some pics of coins with and without frost in the fields.

Being new to morgans I don't know what "frost in the fields" really looks like.
