I have found only a few of these State Quarters since 1999 after looking at tens of thousands. The "hair braid" or queue is not connected to the rest of Washington's hair. The most pronounced I have found so far were on the Mississippi P. This "error" is not common especially in high grades. I got one back from PCGS in MS68 and a few in MS67 and have kept them. I have never been offered these for sale because at this point they are being called a result of excessive die polishing rather than an error or type. This may change in the future and then high graded ones could be worth a substantial premium if called a variety and required to complete sets. At this point, PCGS is not influenced by the anomaly when assigning grades to these coins.

Who knows, though, given the right hype, even a humble die polishing error can command big bucks. Witness the 1937-D "three-legged buffalo" nickel. You can find much more extreme examples of die polishing errors in other years and denominations that cost a buck or two.
