State Quarters errors

I have 4 state quarters where the pony tail is separated from the head.My question is,"if I sent them in to be graded, how will that influence the grading process?"Will appreciate all replys.Thank you.

  • I'd do some research to see if the error/variety is recognized yet. If it isn't, they might not denote it on the holder. Keep looking around until you see some coming up for sale. Once they start to become known, the grading houses will have to make a decision as to whether to add a designation or not. If you submit now, and they don't recognize it, then you've wasted your submissions.

Do you have a scan or picture of the variety? Does not sound like one I have seen before. Also, if it is only minor, send it to ANACS.
  • I have a Texas quarter that has Washington with a bald spot and a sunken eye. Stood out like a sore thumb in my magnifyer, but my scanner is to bright to get a JPG, it keeps washing out.

Sounds like intentional die abrasion (die polishing, die dressing). This would tend to "open up" the low-lying area between pony tail and neck. I've seen quite a few state quarters that are similarly afflicted.

Concerning the second part of your question, it should have no effect on grade. However, it appears to me that grading criteria vary from company to company, grader to grader, year to year, and day to day. So I can't say for certain it won't have any effect.

  • There seems to be a multitude of errors on statehood quarters, resulting in an error premium being pretty small.I'd pick out the best one and send it to ANACS.Pay the extra $1 fee and tell them what's wrong with it and they'll note it on the slab.
  • I want to thank everyone for the replys. It's very interesting.I have them in a safety deposit box and I will get one and scan a picture.Again, thank you all.

I agree with errormaven, sounds like a die polishing error. Very minor, no premium, not worth slabbing.

    Hi Silverandvinyl:
I have found only a few of these State Quarters since 1999 after looking at tens of thousands. The "hair braid" or queue is not connected to the rest of Washington's hair. The most pronounced I have found so far were on the Mississippi P. This "error" is not common especially in high grades. I got one back from PCGS in MS68 and a few in MS67 and have kept them. I have never been offered these for sale because at this point they are being called a result of excessive die polishing rather than an error or type. This may change in the future and then high graded ones could be worth a substantial premium if called a variety and required to complete sets. At this point, PCGS is not influenced by the anomaly when assigning grades to these coins.

More often, the loss of low-lying design elements occur around Washington's ear. Location varies, depending on where the greatest effort was applied.

Who knows, though, given the right hype, even a humble die polishing error can command big bucks. Witness the 1937-D "three-legged buffalo" nickel. You can find much more extreme examples of die polishing errors in other years and denominations that cost a buck or two.
