Did I pay too much...1961 Mantle PSA 9

Opened the bidding on a 1961 Topps World Series Game 2, PSA 9, featuring Mantle and the bid held up at $645. The SMR is $650 and I figured it would go for a lot more. Looks perfectly centered, sharp corners, color, etc. as there was an oversized scan. So what don't I know about this card that other bidders do....did I overpay? Ebay item #5117922778.

Look's like a nice card to me... I don't see anything to be concerned about paying SMR and the price not being run up way beyond it. I don't think you'd have too much trouble getting your money back out of the card in the future.

But yet you won it for less and your wondering if you paid too much?
Seems to me you paid in line of what it was worth. And you won it cheaper then you though, enjoy the card...jay

You're right Jay. I was thinking this is pretty unusual for a Mantle to sell at SMR... so what's up?. I am pleased with the auction result, especially winning for lower than expected, but wondering why no on else bid. Anyways, as you say, I will enjoy this card and be happy with the price and what appears to be a good deal.
  • I vote deal. I also dont think you would have trouble in the future getting at least $650 for it if you one day wanted to unload it.

It's a great card and a great buy. I already have it or I would have bid. I guess Primeagle has this one already.

You definitely did NOT overpay for that card. As you may know, it is very tough to find that card both centered and also without black print marks or little white spots, in any condition. That is a solid "high end" PSA 9 card.

That is one sweet card...I think you made out well.
Proud of my 16x20 autographed and framed collection - all signed in person. Not big on modern - I'm stuck in the past!
  • I agree!!!!Great card great deal!Congrats!!!!!
  • I think you did fine with it. But I would warn you against double bidding so far from the end of the auction. It gives someone else, including a shiller, the oppportunity to split your bid, and thus bid you up.

You may have done even better on mine!

You always did have the best 61's out there.

I might just have to start that set.

Please be kind to me. Even though I'm now a former postal employee, I'm still capable of snapping at any time.
  • 61 T Mantle 9

Before I bought my house, I had a run of Mantle PSA 9s from 1959 through 1965 (not his regular cards, but all the others, ie. All-star, Thrills, etc.) and from my experience, $645 isn't bad. Mantles will always hold their value through time.

Unfortunately, right now, there doesn't seem to be a crazy demand for these "non-base" Topps cards in PSA 9 - this one in particular since Mantle isn't pictured anywhere on the card.

Nevertheless, it's still a cool card and a nice pickup!

Oops... I thought that was the Mick pictured swinging the bat from the right side and wearing number 7.

I beg to differ. There could only be one #7 playing for the Yankees in the '60 series. Perhaps you were saying that he wasn't photographed, since this card appears to show a colored b&w photo...

  • That card, you're right. But it still features Mantle's name, and for some collectors, that's enough.

For those of you who voted "deal"...you were correct! I received the 1961 Mantle today and it's as beautiful as the auction scan showed. The seller was totally professional, a great transaction.

    Actually, a very awesome piece.
