Wow, I have only been able to make one clad PCGS MS66 Ike and here is a dealer that made 23!!! I wonder how he was able to find so many nice Ikes? LinkLink
Either you've been having bad luck with your submissions, or his submissions weren't anonymous like they're supposed to be. It has been rumored from time to time that some folks get better grades than others based on who they know rather than the quality of the coin. Most likely, though, he's just been busting his butt buying all the top pieces for years and now has the market cornered.
<< <i>They are one of the largest buyers of mint sets in the country. They only needed to look through a couple thousand sets for these. >>
I agree with Cladking - if you look through enough mint sets you will find some MS66's for certain dates. Try doing the same for 1974P's or 1976P Type I's. I bet he won't have the same luck!
<< <i>Most likely by busting his ass searching piles and piles of coins. >>
The guy would be dead after looking thru 175,000 coins. The number of coins is bad enough but being exposed to the "beauty" of that design will surely have long-term effects.
Covina does buy a ton of mint sets but doubt he got these coins from mint sets. Probably bought a fresh deal of original BU IKE's. Have a buddy who bought an original bag of 1978-D IKEs and got 25 or so 66's and 1 67.
As usual Russ is right. The secret to getting high grade coins is having access to large quantities of coins that can be cherry picked. To some degree it isn't even what you know. When my 2004 mint sets came in I spent about a half hour showing my kid's Nanny what to look for on the quarters. Paid her $5 extra an hour so she could search while my daughter was napping. She did a good job. She doesn't have experience with coins but understood what to look for and has sharper eyes then me. My 42 year old eyes is no match for a 19 year olds. Isn't aging a b*tch!!!!!!!!!
$75 is way too high, hence no buyers. I'd be shocked to see any more the 1-2 of these sold.
The guy that had the 78-D Bag....Who slabbed the 67??? Must have been NGC, because there is only one PCGS 78-D and it's been graded for almost 15 years, and I know where it is!

And here I thought it was the computer radiation that caused that!
No, no, that's AH Kennedy half radiation that turns you into Marty the albino ferret.
