Tooled Morgans-Picture Added

Is there an area on a Morgan that is 'tooled' more than any other area?

I have both a 93-S & 89-CC that are designated as tooled (& whizzed!).image

Will get pict's up soon, & will try to shoot a close up of an area if one is specified a problem area.

  • I would imagine on heavily circulated specimens that on the obverse, the lines in the cotton bolls and the area between the leaves for separation in order to squeeze an extra number or two.

On the reverse, the lines dividing the feathers in the wings.

watch for buffing on the cheek or scratches buffed out of the fields.

Do you have a pic of the whole coin? If wizzed, the coin should have the field ground down.

Augie, those cotton bolls have definitely been tooled, and one the better jobs I have seen lately. Most attemps of tooling I have seen on Morgans have been pretty crude.
  • What exactly is tooling, or rather what's the purpose of it? Is it the end result of counterfeiting? Or is it from trying to clean one particular area on the coin's surface?

In keeping with the tone of this thread, can anyone present some good pictures of two identical coins, one whizzed and one not.

I have no real concept of what a whizzed coin looks like... thanks!

To put detail back into a coin where it has worn down or suffers from a weak strike. Making the bands look full on a Merc dime would be an example of tooling.

    No.
