Here are four 1796 Draped cents from my collection. Thought you'd all like to see some beat up coppers for a change. Comments welcome.

Nice coins! I like old copper....wish I had one. I still need 1796 for my date set.

Nice! That's the way old coins are supposed to look. There's something (besides the price) about MS coins I just don't like.

Very nice S-103, 104, 109, and 110. the 1796 draped busts are TOUGH coins. Officially they have a mintage twice that of the caps but I suspect the figures must be way off because the caps show up about three to four times as often as the Draped bust coins. (At any medium sized show you can usually find several caps but you will usually be lucky to find even one Draped bust of any variety, not including stocks of copper specialist dealers.) And although there are almost three times as many varieties of draped bust they are almost all scarce to rare.

I would agree that 1796 draped busts are a real pain to locate. How many of you collect large cents by date, but don't have a 1796 draped, or have an ugly filler or two? There's a reason for it. The problem is that there are many interesting varieties, including Reverse of 1794, Reverse of 1795, Reverse of 1797, and LIHERTY. Everyone who collects large cents by Redbook variety must get four 1796's, increasing the pressure on this already scarce date. Then there are the people who try to get all of them by Sheldon variety. These people hoard essentially them because they need 28 different 1796 draped busts to complete their collection, not including the NC coins. There are a lot of collectors who specialize in one year of early large cents, and 1796 is a popular one to pick.

Also, throw your Redbook and greysheet in the garbage can on this one. The book prices are too low.

Good stuff. I love nice, relatively problem-free early copper with nice, even coloration -- in any condition. image

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

And I'm one of the guilty ones, I have 27 of them. Only missing the S-96.
