aloof it is a live auction, as for the card i assume it was cut from a sheet. the seller claims the card is a "rookie" and then goes on and describes how it has abrasions etc, 10k opening bid? lol yeah ok
    Good for you.

Actually the opening bid is $2500; they "estimate" the final price will be $10K or more.

Clearly not people very familiar with cards, to be calling Mick's third-year card a "rookie."

Regardless of the condition of the cards, the strip SEEMS rare in that I haven't heard of 1953 strips being sold. It could be that these people (or Al Rosen before them) bought a 1953 sheet and cut it into strips that would seem unique ... more unique than a sheet, anyway.

To me, the sheet would be worth more than the separate strips. But maybe they figure the Mantle strip alone will sell for the price of a sheet, then they can sell off the other strips for added profit.

The white borders look very white and the pictures looks exceptionally clear. If not for the creases, I'd think it was an Archives reprint sheet. The person selling it obviously knows nothing about cards, though. Poor photos, too. Could be a cool item, but I'd stay away.

I'm always leery of Ebay sellers with less than 99% positive feedback. The vast majority of great sellers are at 99.5% or above.

98.8% jumps out as a type of caution.

No returns and no hobby type description of condition.

I'd look at it in person if I was bidding on it.

I'm in agreement with Helio. I suspect that this may be an archives uncut sheet made into a strip or actually purchased that way - one could find out if the back is open also and ask for a pic I guess. The seller deals in this kind of stuff so don't over-expect - also people complained about their service!

I highly doubt Rosen would have done something like that with an uncut strip of 53's that included a Mantle...framing them in a manner where if they were removed from the frame, there could eventually be fade lines along the top and bottom borders. Those cards are definitely from the Archives set, the borders are too white.

I can't view Ebay while I'm here at work, so I'm only guessing, but is it possible it's a 1953 Topps reprint from Baseball Cards magazine? Didn't they run some 53s as an insert one time? Forgive me if I'm mistaken, my mind is pretty foggy on the details...

Baseball Cards magazine featured three '53 Bowman Color cards in its June '86 edition. I remember Campanella and Musial were two of them, but I don't remember who was on the third. I do remember they ran an item a couple of months later stating that some collectors had cut out the cards and one seller was ready to drop a bunch of money on them until he saw the 1986 copyright date on the back.

After that, BBCM printed up cards of current players in a classic design, like Roger Clemens on a '41 Play Ball or Don Mattingly in the '51 Topps design, rather than reprinting older cards...perhaps because they realized that there were some hobbyists who could make those reprints look genuine.

Edited to correct a really stupid spelling error.

I used to have most of the old Baseball Cards Magazines, and the only Mantle card I remember them doing was a "dream rookie" in the 1949 Bowman format.
