The Benson Pedigree

In my quest for high grade Roosie dimes, I am coming across many slabs with a pedigree of 'Benson' printed on them. Does anyone know where I can research this??

You can start here on these boards. Type in Benson in the search area and you will see a number of threads dealing with this pedigreed collector.

  • Yeah, there have been a few threads about Benson recently. For most coins, the Benson pedigree IS NOT worth a premium, especially on Mercs, and probally in Roosys too... for Mercs, they have been submitted to PCGS by the roll full and have flooded EBay... I would suspect the same is true for Roosys...

  • I'm kinda noticing that the pedigree on later dates doesn't mean much. All the Roosie dimes I'm seeing with his name on them are all MS66. I can, and have, gotten better quality coins without the pedigree. Might anyone here have an auction catalog from the sale where this collection was broken up? If anyone has any MS67+ Roosies or 1950-64 PFs in 68 or better with Benson on the slab, I'd be interested in those, if only for the grades.

I believe his collection was sold through Superior galleries. The site seems to be down, but I remember perusing some of the auction catalog online.

I purchased a Proof Barber half and researched Benson also. Seems his coins were wonderfully toned and his collection large and extensive, but that the quality of the coins in many series was average at best. The Barber halves in particular were beautiful to look at, but many had hairlines and few graded above 64 or 65

Tyler, I believe it was the Goldberg's who auctioned off the Benson collection. I picked up an AU Bust quarter from that sale.

  • Yeah, thanks for link. I spent a little too much time there myself. Hmm... this Benson person looks like more of a hoarder than a collector, although he did have some nice and somewhat rare pieces there, a large chunk of it looks like mid grade (65/66) uncirculated stuff that isn't too hard to find higher.
