coin photography:microsoft scanner and camera wizard

making some major progress overcoming file size problems. I have found that if I rotate the coin image before the coin makes its final upload from camera to computer, my initial pic is much reduced(size wise) and I have unlimited ability to compress smaller-if I don't rotate, I have a limit to how much I can compress(~36kb). Can anyone explain this situation?

  • Hi 1907,
I don't know the answer to your question - as you know I am using a scanner. But, you are capturing nice luster in your photographs! image

    Best,
    Billy

PS - I attach the lastest scan of my Pr Seated 10c - very pleased with the sculptural quality. It also shows the strike very well I think - and I think it is a pretty good strike for this coin.

  • 1907, Could the camera be changing the format or compression settings when you alter the image "in camera" ? Check the manufacturer's website or manual.
  • actually, I take a shot with a particular setting. then:
1.I connect the cam to the comp and turn the cam on
2.comp detect pictures that want to come in
3.it (the camera wizard(microsoft))shows me a thumbnail of the actual pic and asks me if I want to load it in
3a.there is an option to rotate at this point
3b.if I don't, and load, the kb is high
3c.if I rotate 90,180,270 it comes in lower!

Hope this describes the process...what a mystery!

The answer may be that the computer has to resave the image after it rotates and will apply a light JPG compression to it. I bring my pics over on my old camera they would be about 2Mb (camera uses almost no compression). When I would do nothing but open them and resave them they would drop to about 400K. the software was giving them a light compression when I resave them.

  • an interesting additional point, the "slight" compression, seems not to degrade the quality, as I have examined rotated and unrotated pics and they look the same! thanks for the explanation-you're pretty sure on it I take it? It sounds reasonable!
