lost hoards?

I have been reading the new QDB book on Morgans and have enjoyed reading about the history leading up to the minting and the processes involved. I was curious though as to any legends of lost or stolen hoards of Morgans. It would seem that with the many many 1000 coin bags having been transported all over the U.S. and especially in the west, that there must have been some thefts.

Anything legendary about these coins and/or missing hoards?

Black Bart used to rob Wells Fargo stagecoaches. He ran whenever somebody pulled a gun on him. I doubt anyone took on the US Treasury, I'm sure it was armed to the teeth. Maybe the James gang?

I believe there was a legend of small Fort Knox banks full of Morgans stuffed into a desk in a Texas Ghost town.

Was it an "abandoned ghost town" by chance? After all, fully populated ghost towns are hard to search with all those people in the way.
