Should I crackout my 58 for 3 X the money?

I have a 1905 S Five Dollar Half Eagle that is in an ANACS AU58 slab.

If I crack it out and have it inserted in one of These slabs, I'm sure it will go 64 (as I do not have all those scratches on the obverse of mine).

Then it will sell for at least 3 times its current value.

What cha all think?

If your coin is truly 58, then let it be. If you are convinced you have a 64, then send it to NGC or PCGS and see if they agree with you or not.

And, if you have no intention to sell the coin regardless, then leave it be until you are ready to sell and only then think about reslabbing.

I was just being sarcastic at how far NTC could be off on the grading. There is no way that coin with those scratches could possibly grade a 63. I got a 58 because of a light smear of die grease on the reverse and I think that if I had dipped the coin in acetone prior to submitting it to ANACS it would have went MS.

I'm actually headed to a dealer with a box of material tomorrow and my 58 is in the box (that is why I was researching the price on the Bay).

  • Don't do it. The last thing we need is one more unethical seller in this hobby. If you truly believe that your coin is undergraded, cross it over to PCGS or NGC. It might still come back as a 58, but it'll be living in a more respectable neighborhood.
