I ususally have luck w/ the BB Card Kid....

I just opened a 1979 Baseball vending box - no Ozzie and 80%+ of the cards were off centered 80-20 OR WORSE. All the major stars but Ryan were off centered - even miscut. Complete waste of money. Plus I bought a 1984 USFL set and the Young rookie had a line running through the middle of the damn card. I'm not trying to imply it's Mark's fault - just bad luck. On the bright side, I did pull a nice Clemens rookie out of the Fleer update set.

only way to buy vending boxes is to buy an opened case.
Money is your ticket to freedom.
  • Greg I had also bought a box off him with the same results. No Ozzie card but the part that I didn't like was less than half the box was nice and uniform with a nice packing sequence but then the other more than half of the box had cards facing each other and upside down. Also had found something I never seen before 5 of the same card all in the same section the bad section. Also in the bad section all the star cards were way off center although there was beautifully centered Jim Palmer but it had scratch marks from top to bottom (how does that happen?) The good news is out of the clean section I was able to pull a Schmidt and Rose highlight that graded a PSA 9 with no qualifiers. There was also 5 other commons that graded 9. I don't think that they will even cover the cost of the grading. I did take the 2 badly off center benches and put them in my sons bike spokes and told him that is what we used to do to our 75 Brett and Yount cards when we was his age.

I recently picked up a 1979 vending box from him. I hope to get it in a few days and I hope I get the Ozzie's you didn't get.

2 jordan rookies one BGS 8.5 and one PSA 9 PD

    malone PSA 9
    jabbar PSA 9

the guy is rock solid and HONEST! I totally understand the bad luck but this guy is thte BEST dealer when it comed to integrity their is!

we bought 12 mini 75 wax packs and pulled the ONLY ryan highlihgt psa 9 over 120 graded and ONLY one 9 and none higher

I go to his table at every show he is at!

I love knowing that sometimes I will get BELOW PSA 9 material(due to the factory) however sometimes I will get gem mint SUPERSTAR cards because he does not reseal them. that is a gamble my friends I am happy to take!

  • Be careful in your statements about people who make a living out of this. I would think it would be more appropriate and you would get better results if you contacted the seller yourself. The BBCKid is one of the best if not best (along with BBCExchange) for unopened wax, and just because you did not get an Ozzie does not mean they were searched. Have you ever opened a new box of football and not gotten a Vick or a new box of baseball and not received a Pujols?

These are cards not lotterey tickets, and my advice would be to buy a few cheap boxes of 1981 or 1986 and write down the top 5 card you would like to get and see how many if any you get - you will be surprised at the number (low). Also, from 1974-1980 the paper stock and cutting of cards on sheets was not very good overall, and I have opened 1974-76 vending boxes and received a Ryan or a Brett only to have it be way off center - most of the other cards were as well.

  • I just stated what I found. I know what the risk rewards on these boxes are and hope everyone can get what they are looking for.
  • I think he's honest too.... even though I will say I have heard bad things about him as well. But I do think the point above about how you can get horrible cards, no RC, off center etc, and just be bad luck is definately true. Just because you have a bad night at the blackjack table doesnt mean the casino is rigged. If you want to get into the vending game, I suggest buying a vending box of 84 topps baseball from a half way decent dealer.... really cheap, wont be searched, and youll see how hard it is to pull a nice mattingly....

  • I agree with you 100% kalch23. I once opened a 82 topps vending case and never got a single Cal Ripken 9. It is tougher than many think to try and find Gem Mint cards.
  • Sounds to me like you are just looking for symphaty on getting a bad box. If that's what you are looking for its found between s**t and syphilis in the dictionary.

I agree that's it tough to pull nice cards from vending boxes - I've opened around 20 1978 to 1985 vending boxes and have pulled very few PSA 9 or higher from them. These 79's were absolute trash. Topps should have pitched them instead of selling them. I'm not kidding when I say that between 30 and 40% of the cards were completely miscut and 80%+ were centered 80-20 or worse. The point of my post was that I have never seen a vending box quite as bad as the one I just opened.

Actually, "venting" does not fall between "vasectomy" and "venerial", but that's neither here nor there. image

I feel your pain. We've all experienced it, except of course for Ping. Yeah, brilliant post! image

  • I might be wrong on this, but I think that '79 vending cases have serial numbers and that there is essentially a "series" type of logic to the cards you get based on the serial number from the case. I have been told from more than one long time dealer that there are certain serial numbers on '79 vending cases that just will not have an ozzie rookie in them. Again, I do not know this for an absolute fact, but I have heard it from more than one source. Anyone else have any insight on this??

Geeze, in all my experiences, I've gotten absolutely beautiful cards from vending. I would suggest being more careful of what you're buying and who you are buying them from. Inspect the box a lot before you buy.
