Lets talk about the SCARFACE morgan!

Over in an ANA thread, Matteproof asked me if I saw any scarface coins.

thread link

It got interesting when Wolfe359 noted that "One sold on eBay in the last 10 days at $5,500. PCGS MS62."

Davewang202 followed up with a comment that it sold with a BIN of $5500, less than a day after it was listed. ebay link

I thought folks might like to see my pride and joy 1988 VAM-1B scarface, pictured below.

What a huge, awesome, incredible die break!

    What a coin....

What else can I say? You've got many great coins in your collection but this one is your finest I think.
  • Beautiful coin!!
"Freedom of speech is a great thing.Just because you can say anything does not mean you should.
  • Prices from the Top 100 book, 3rd Edition 1997:

    MS-63 $750
    MS-62 $350

Sounds like the prices have risen a little

Cool die break Rob! Can you help me out with some info on an 1884-O with ES below the date in the denticles? Thanks mike image
  • Hi Mike,
In the "Morgan Overdates, Over Mintmarks, Misplaced Dates, and Clashed E reverses" book by Kevin Flynn, he notesan 1884-O with a misplaced date in the denticles between the 8 and 4 in the date. I don't know of any ES clashed in the denticles. There is nothing in Leroy Van Allen's book or recent updates. Can you supply photos? It may be worth sending to Leroy for a look. Regards,

    Rob

Thanks Robimage, in another thread a fellow forum member pointed out this info on a VAM website-
<< <i>VAM 38 VAM Number changed to VAM 25. Eliminated reference to "ES". Too much evidence of "188" in denticles. [LVA] >>

. I should have the coin in my possesion in a few day's and I'll get some pictures up right away. mike

that's the nicest one I've ever seen---congrats on an awesome pickup. btw, judging by the pic she looks undergraded.
    • Nice Scarface Rob. The Scarface has been an under appreciated Morgan $1 Rarity. The Scarface has already crossed the Vam barrier into the Morgan Variety barrier. Thanks! image matteproof

    • BigAl,
Thanks. The grade actually is fairly accurate if you see the coin in person. I took a dozen pics with light in different angles to make sure the the "scar" was prominently displayed. The actual coin has some chatter that doesn't show in the pic I chose. In any event, this is one of my favorite coins!

I do not own one the moment and I am looking back at the chances I had to buy one or two... and that is why I am not feeling good. I had no idea that this coin had that value.

Rob, great looking coin! Could you possibly post a photo of the reverse as well? I owned one for a short while and it had some pretty neat die clashes on the reverse. Thanks in advance. image

Gee, with a sharp knife you could make a lot of "scarface" Morgans. Especially the 1893S and the Proofs.imageimageimage:;imageimage:

    • Rick,
The reverse does have some good clashes. Here's a pic of some of them. The eagle has a beard!

      image

Also the 1888-O VAM-1A has a great clashed E reverse so two different dies made hard contact without a planchet in between!

My Scarface is also a PCGS-62, and the bird also has a clash "beard".

I want one, but I doubt I'll ever cherry it. Had a chance to buy one last fall in a PCGS 62 holder for $2750 and passed.

Thanks for the photos. That's the "beard" I was thinking of. Nice coin Rob. Yours too Dennis image.
