The plaque I won, received it in the mail before I got home...
The coin that won the award and accompanying plaque. The coin shows an S mintmark between the 1 and 9 of the date. Thanks CONECA!

<< <i>Congrats ... but that looks more like a 'D' to me. >>
This one is a late-die state example. If you consider the curve you do see as the lower curve, then follow it upward you will find the upper serif - barely. It really shows well on earlier die state coins. This one is a bit mushed out, but I can't complain for 50 cents. I just wish I could get rid of the huge carbon spot...unfortunately the only one on the coin gets in the way.
Below is an enhanced image of the area as I wish it looked - this accurately follows the line of the mintmark as it would show if it were punched more strongly.

How did this variety occur?
<< <i>Did they give you a sneak peak at the cherrypickers guide Vol 2??? >>
Well, actually the award is in honor of....CONECA gives the award, not Fivas and Stanton. Nice try though

One of the big super-mysteries in US coinage...a lot like the Flying Eagle cents that show die clashes from odd coins ranging from the 50 cent piece to the $20 gold. Nobody knows exactly how these came about.
My theory is that the Mint didn't store the mintmark punches away in 1955 and one was accidentally grabbed and used...twice. This isn't the only OMM for 1956D. As for why the punch happened so far up? Maybe a Japanese restaurant for lunch and too much sake?

I thought you were going into the Pawn Broker bussiness.
In any event congrats on your fine award.

An EDS or MDS coin (which shows the variety better than the above photo) in MS63 is around $75. In MS65, $125. If slabbed it could bring more. For LDS values drop about 25% from the values given.
I know a person who is in contention for the finest known specimen, an ANACS MS66RD - Likely a $300+ coin. Since 1956D is quite scarce in MS67 as it is, finding one that happens to be this variety and MS67 to boot would be a real chore indeed. I know of at least three people who would offer four figures to own one should it ever surface.
