My 1957 CAM?/DCAM? Lincoln - Just a stock photo

I bought this on eBay just from the appearance of the reverse on the cent for a shot at a CAM/DCAM designation. I couldn't tell on the obverse but what the heck.

When it arrives, it's not a DCAM, nor a CAM. It also came in a nice envelope (instead of the one picutured)

So...

<< <i>Hello. The proof set I received today was not the one
pictured. Please advise on how I can return this set for the pictured one. >>

<< <i>We use stock photos for our proof sets and mints sets.
I do make special description changes as needed concerning the coins and
even the envelope. Please return the proof set for a full refund: >>

<< <i>Your "stock" photo shows a 1957 DCAM cent which would appear you have sold
over and over without any indication that it is a stock photo. This
deceptive form of advertising is illegal in California and many other
states. >>

<< <i>Sir,
We do not consider this a DCAM cent and it was not advertised as such.
We apologize for any mis-interpretation of our photo. There was no
deception intended.
We did have 2 other coin dealers check our picture and all are in
agreement - it is definitely not a DCAM cent only a proof cent.
Upon return of the set, I will reimburse you for all postage (sending and
returning) and the bid amount. >>

Oh well. I gambled and didn't win - but didn't lose either. Sometimes, even is a good thing.

I don't plan on leaving feedback, but considered a neutral Uses stock photos

If you didn't ask first you didn't do your homework. You got what you bought then, a 57 proof set. You got what you bought, we know we have all done it. Leave him a positive and get on with your life! If Russ and I were there we would slap you!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • Yeah... whenever I find a set I like, I always e-mail asking if the set picture is the set the winner will get. Though Marty will tell you, he got screwed over by a lying seller...

The photo doesn't show a CAM cent and he's going to pay all postage costs?
I'd say this Seller deserves a positive. You may not buy from him again, but he deserves recognition for righting a wrong (in your eyes, not his) without arguement and in a timely manner.

    Relayer,

I'm surprised at you. You're certainly no rookie, and should know that it is always prudent to verify the image before bidding.

  • TYPICAL BAIT AND SWITCH TO GARNER A FRAUDULENTLY WAY TOO HIGH OF A BID LEVEL.
ASK 'DOLLARBILL' HE DOES IT ALL THE TIME,SO DOES EASTCOASTCOIN,LITTLESCOINANDJEWELRY,MOMMYAND2BOYZ (OR SUMPIN LIKE THAT).
I COULD NAME 50 MORE AT LEAST
I COULD ALSO NAME A BBUUNNCCHH OF "SEALED" PROOF SET SELLERS THAT ARE RIPPING FOLKS OFF AND CLAIM IGNORANCE WHEN CONFRONTED AFTER YOU PAY DOUBLE BID AND GET IN A DOG OR (DOG RUN) OF SETS. ALL THEY ARE DOING (SOME OF EM) IS EITHER USING THE 10'S OF THOUSANDS OF UNUSED REAL MINT ENVELOPES BOUGHT IN GOVT SALES FOR A SONG AND "RESEALING THE DOGS WITH MAYBE A BONE OR TWO IN THERE TO MAKE IT APPEAR REAL" OR ARE EITHER USING THESE KEENLY MADE MODERN REPROS,BUYING REGULAR SETS UP ALL THE TIME AND ARE CONSTANTLY RUNNING SINGLE OR SMALL GROUPS OF "SEALED SETS" OR A RUN,ETC AND DOUBLING THEIR MONEY,KNOWINGLY FRAUDULENT,ILLEGAL AND WITHOUT A CARE IN THE WORLD ABOUT YOU,THE SCREWED BUYER

I just happened to see this set while doing a browse on items ending soon and the reverse just happened to catch my eye.

The seller is a 5000+ so that should have been a clue to stock photos but there was no mention of it (but the text did talk about spots on the half). The seller made no mention of a CAM or DCAM or anything - that was just in my mind.

But I was willing to bet $33 to look at THAT set.
I wouldn't bet $33 that the dealer would send me ANY set that would have a DCAM cent.

It's true I should of asked, but I didn't have time because it was closing.

I wasn't ripped here - I get my $28 + $5 S/H PLUS return postage back, so it's a good seller and I'm out nothing. Stock photos are becoming a pet peeve for me.

When I sell a proof set, I take the couple of minutes to do a scan and list it with the picture at no reserve, which is what I would have done if they sent me the pictured set and it wasn't what I wanted it to be.

I think she was scared about a negative which is why I get the S/H back too.

I normally leave a "Good Customer Service" positive on refunded coins, but I think faint positives are a waste, like "Used Stock Photos without stating so, but issued Full Refund"

    HMMMMM!!!

Ethical delimma here. Buyers screwed by unscrupulous e-bay sellers?????

I see a very good return policy from the seller (admirable) and others claiming bait and switch, fraud etc, that have unstated no return policies.

Seems like a touch of dichotomy!!!

  • Pretty easy to move the lighting around and make a Linky appear to be a cameo.

Heres my deal, i rarely buy an opened 57 proof set (like that aint been picked over 10,000 times),i rarely buy a sealed 57 set unless the pix has the color i like,if i get one and it looks like a bait and switch
i make arrangements to return it,unless i stole it,then i look at it and flip it on the bay as opened, unless i find something i liked.

57 linkys and jeffs are tough coins in Cams,if you have one in hand and it looks like a cam,its likely a cam and maybe a dcam, very fine line here, unlike the 57 silvers !

  • I know my good friend and fellow Mississippian Jeff AKA Doop will agree with this statement. EBAY is full of unsavory sellers who will bait and switch you in a heart beat. However in this particular case, I think the seller is correct. I dont see any indication of a cameo in that picture, on the obverse. And that is the problem side on the wheaties. image
