New 58mm close-up lens, and since we have been on a guess the grade roll tonight anyone care to...

guess the grade (in a PCGS holder)? These were taken with my Canon G2, my new 58mm cloes-up lens adapter and a polarizing filter. The scratches on the obverse in front of the nose are reflections off the holder and yes that is a die crack on the reverse running along the top of the STATE.

Need to work on getting the focus better on a close-up. Since it is digital is is hard to fine tune.

Edited to add close-up of die crack

  • I'll venture a guess that will probably be at least 2 points off. MS65?

  • I actually have a lot of 63s that look similar, so I was going to say 63 at first, but then I looked at them and realized that most of them are heavily bagmarked, which is probably why they couldn't make the next higher grade, but the one he is showing doesn't look nearly as bad as mine do. Fact is, his looks rather clean compared to most of my 63s.

After right-clicking on properties, I'll guess MS 62?? imageimage

  • LOL.....now that's using your brain hehehe. Yup MS-62 I sent this in with two others both of which were BB'd saying they were cleaned, although I cannot see the tell-tales on them. One (1884-O) is now my pocket piece for awhile. See if I cant wear it down a bit and resubmit hehe.

Nice start. What are you using for a copy stand? With my Digital Rebel and 58mm macro lens I had to go and get one of those little bubble levels and a regular small level. I had to level the copy stand and the camera. If not part of the coin was part in focus and part was out. Also try manual focusing too.

  • Rat, that and the Saint are some nice pics. But perhaps you have the jpeg compression turned up a bit too high? For example it's a bit difficult to see detail on the Morgan. I'd be interested to see the same Morgan pics, albeit with a lot more jpeg information in that 375-pixel 17K image you've got.

  • Thanks for the advice sequitur, I'll read my camera manual some more and see what I can do with the camera settings. The G2 has a ton of pro features that I have not had time to delve into. The Morgan and the Saint were taken with the coins propped up on a 2x2 tent sitting on a barstool with a 100watt light pointed at it from about 2 feet to the left rear of the camera and a 60 watt from about 2 feet to the right rear. Very technical setp for those photos image . I will continue to experiment.
