Does anybody know about these strange NGC "BU" slabs?

I know these have been around for at least a little while, but I really don't understand them. Do they still make these slabs? What was the purpose in the first place?

They were produced specificly for one of the TV coin selling programs.

Does anybody know if these are still being made? It seems like these would end up being looked at negatively by most collectors....

Looks like TV coin garbage to me. I have seen them hyped in the last week or two. Seems to me as long as the TV hypesters can continue to sell them, they will continue to "make" them.

IMO, this is a disservice to the hobby. What do you pay for a BU Morgan? MS 61 money? MS 62? MS 63? MS 64? I don't think so.

  • Is it really any different than the GSA packaging?
You know at least it is uncirculated, so its worth MS60 money.

Not that it is really useful, except to know it is unc and genuine.

If all they say is "BU," then sight unseen they're worth no more than MS-60 money. If you can see the coin, you might decide it's worth 61 or 62 money. I doubt that many coins generically slabbed "BU" are going to be better than 62.
  • Thats a "COIN VAULT" only slab !

    something like 69.99 ea !

The Binion hoard slabs used a different label, as do the "red, white, and blue" ones in the HSN link. There have been others as well. NGC has seriously debased themselves with all the "specialty" slabs that they have produced for these TV shows that sell to the unknowledgeable. Thy have traded reputation for money.
