Madison Coin Shops

Was in Madison, Wisconsin this week and visited two coin shops.

Jim's Coin & Stamp and Madison Coin & Stamp (the place was like a war zone, but so much great stuff).

Both were very interesting shops, with tons of material. I felt like a kid in a Candy store in Jim's.

I scored three nice pieces for my type set and an "unopened" 1964 Proof set. Nothing in the set was cameo except maybe the dime. I have a hard time judging the quality of the coin through those hazy plastic holders.

Does anyone here visit those stores? Maybe one of you runs those stores?

It was just nice to get to an actual coin shop for the first time.

  • Jim's Coin shop was formerly Len's Coin shop. Len was/is a error coin collector for many years in the area. He sold the business "lock, stock and barrel", so basically the store looks the same. I hope Len will continue to be involved in the local collecting community. He has been one of the organizers of the Madison Coin Club shows. Len was the best, I hope that Jim carries on where he left off.

BTW - there are three other small shops in the Madison area that I know of. On University Ave. (Middelton) is University Coin & Stamp and right across the street is Civitas that sells ancients. Capitol City Coin is over on Stoughton road in Monona.
