(Info about the upcoming Long Beach Expo posted by -donn-)

Double Eagles Take Flight
At September Long Beach Expo

(Long Beach, CA) – A $6 million display of Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles and a special appearance by author and researcher, David Tripp, will highlight the Long Beach Coin, Stamp & Collectibles Expo, Thursday – Saturday, September 9 – 11, 2004, in the Long Beach, California Convention Center. Another major attraction will be two public seminars conducted by eBay about buying and selling collectibles online.

“Tripp cataloged the historic July 2002 Sotheby’s/Stack’s $7,590,020 auction of the only 1933 Double Eagle the federal government will allow to be privately owned, and he was at the coin’s exhibition at the June 2002 Long Beach Expo. He will meet with collectors at the upcoming September show and autograph copies of his new book, ‘ILLEGAL TENDER: Gold, Greed and the Mystery of the Lost 1933 Double Eagle,’ published by Simon & Schuster,” said Ronald J. Gillio, Expo General Chairman.

Tripp will conduct an educational seminar about the 1933 Double Eagle at 2 p.m., Thursday, September 9, and sign autographs all three days of the Long Beach Expo, Thursday through Saturday.

In conjunction with the first West Coast appearance of Tripp’s new book, there will be a $6 million exhibit of selected examples of Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles that were minted from 1907 to 1933. Gillio, Steve Contursi of Rare Coin Wholesalers and Ira and Larry Goldberg are providing valuable, historic coins for the display.

Exhibit highlights include a 1907 High Relief, Wire Edge variety (graded PCGS MS65); one of the two known Extremely High Relief with inverted lettered edge (PR68); a 1908 No Motto $20 gold piece from the Wells Fargo/Nevada Gold Hoard (PCGS MS69 and one of only ten Saint-Gaudens coins of any year to be certified MS69 by either PCGS or NGC); and a 1927-D (PCGS MS66).

“Almost a half million Double Eagles were minted in 1933 at the time President Franklin D. Roosevelt took America off the gold standard,” explained Tripp. “Never issued as legal tender, all the 1933 Double Eagles were supposed to be melted except for two sent to The Smithsonian Institution. But through deceit, corruption, intrigue and human error, some coins slipped out of the Mint and into private hands.”
eBay, a sponsor of the Long Beach Expo, will present two free educational seminars for collectors and dealers, “Buying & Selling on eBay,” conducted by Troy Thoreson, eBay Seller’s Consultant, at Noon on both Friday, September 10, and Saturday, September 11.

Additional educational seminars and exhibits will be presented by the Long Beach Coin Club and Long Beach Stamp Club, and a half dozen specialty organizations. A complete schedule of events can be found online at www.LongBeachShow.com.

Heritage Galleries of Dallas, Texas will conduct a multi-million dollar public auction of historic rare coins and paper money, and also hold an auction of sports memorabilia, during the show.

There will be a children’s treasure hunt on Saturday, September 11, and a gold coin door prize will be awarded each day of the three-day show.

In addition to eBay and Heritage, other Expo sponsors include Professional Coin Grading Service, Numismatic Guaranty Corporation, British Royal Mint, Spanish Royal Mint, UBS Numismatics/Art Banking, World Money Fair of Basel, Switzerland and Coin Facts.com.
Show hours are Thursday - Saturday, September 9 - 11, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Admission is $6 (good for all three days); $3 for seniors 65 and older and children, ages 8 to 16. (Free admission for children aged seven and younger.)
