Has anyone taken the time to complete a full set of one type/date/MM coin in all grades?

Would be an interesting set to have for educational purposes. Better to be a large coin, say a Kennedy half so the differences would stand out, but to have one coin of the same type, date, MM etc... but in every grade from PF-70 on down to "junk".

Ok, I'll shut-up now and just troll. image

    That would be interesting, actually.

I like that idea. I have a "set" goal that is similar to that, except in Proofs. In the Franklin series, I've started these sets in different grades:

    Finest Set
    Proof CAM
    Proof 68/69
    Proof 67
    Proof 66
    Proof 65
    Proof 64

If anyone has any I may be interested in, shoot me a PM image

At one time I started a grading set of unc clad quarters but found the MS-61's and 62's were
of no interest whatsoever to me. I did save some of the worst of the MS-60's though, just
in case no one else did. No one might believe how bad they were unless they could actually
    see one of them.

    I don't think it's possible. Have you ever seen a G-05 or a F-13?

I believe that there are a number of folks here who are putting together "grading sets".

You could probably do it with about 1/2 the number of coins you think you need coins. Enough of them would come back a different grade with resubmission that you can cover multiple grades with a single coin.

I know of someone doing this with 1932-D Washington Quarters - complete from FR02 to MS64......can't find a PO01 and MS65's are pretty pricey (not to mention the pop-1 MS66). My FR02 is pretty close to a PO01 but.....

Working my way up with Lincolns, from AG3 to BU, not too hard on the budget and the kids can help. We have AG3, G, VG, F and almost finished VF, have BU in the moderns and some 40's/50's. We don't do in between grades, but I 've seen enough of them to tell a G6 from a "G7".

  • Grading sets! That's the term that just wouldn't come to mind last night.

I like ibzman's idea of the Morgans. A very common coin, easily found in a multitude of grades, large enough to distinguish the varying degrees of grade (and thus provide the educational value which is the intent of such a set) and not too expensive to acquire.

However I would probably go for something along the lines of the 1903 Philadelphia. Very reasonably priced all the way through the MS-66. The challenges would come in in at MS67-68 levels and I doubt a 69/70 even exists. The proofs, while pricey are at least available.

The more I think on this the more I am intrigued by the idea and I may just have to pursue this.

I've completed Barber Dime sets in G-4, VG-8, and F-12, with only one coin missing in the VF-20 set. I doubt I'll continue this trend past AU-50, though.

I've been trying to do this with just one DATE in a series -- 1895-S Morgan dollar -- and just the circulated grades.

I started in March 2000 and I'm not finished yet (still need Good-4, Fine-15 and AU55.

The "star" of the set is a Poor-01 !!

This project has taught me so much more about how PCGS grades circulated Morgans than I ever had a clue about before, that I can't even believe it.
    When in doubt, don't.

DesertRat: Braddick has a near monopoly on the P01 and F02 grades. Those are the toughest to find! Might be the keys to the grading sets!

  • Colorful,

Pop that puppy out and carry it around with you. Every so often take it out and rub it between your thumb and forefinger, drag it across a few countertops and let it generally rattle around with the rest of the loose change in your pocket. You'll have it down to a PO01 in a few weeks or less. image
