Latex Gloves Vs. Cotton..any preference?

Was curious as to the effect of different types of gloves used when handling coins, especially proofs. I can see where cotton gloves would possibly prevent scratches to the mirrors if inadvertently touched, but you also have a lint issue. Also when using the same pair of gloves several times, the natural oils in your hands would absorb into the cotton easily and if you remove the gloves by pulling on the fingers you will also transfer oils from the bare fingers to the outside of the glove which could then transfer to the coins without realizing it. So unless you use a cheap disposable cotton glove it would seem that possibly latex might be the better choice. But that brings up the question of do latex gloves (talc free) have any chemicals in their make-up that could also harm your proofs?

I know I am probably going overboard in thinking of this but dogonnit inquiring minds want to know!

I have never used gloves when handling coins. When I refill my printer cartridges, I use latex gloves.

I would be extremely careful when handling coins with any typeof gloves. You should do a search for other threads about gloves on these boards.

  • Rat,
they make nitrophyl gloves as well, lots o people are allergic to latex.
Imagine whipping on a latex condom and get a rude surprise come morning !!!!!
i use throw away cotton gloves, but the POWDER FREE latex or nitro are cheap, about 7-8 bucks for 50 pair
at most auto parts stores !
Got a NAPA in Rosamond ? i worked for Napa down here,we had about 12-15 part numbers in gloves alone.

funny how often this question gets asked! i do not recommend cotton gloves due to past experience. it's too ez for a coin to slip out of your grip. otoh, some latex gloves may have that powdery reside that can get on the coin.

what works best for me is a simple piece of saran wrap.
