Coin supplies

I currently store my coins in the appropriate sized 2x2 carboard holders with the clear window. When I bought my last lot of supplies I made sure to order the kind that don't have whatever bad chemical used to be in the old holders. I don't think they even make that type anymore.

Anyway, I am looking for a better way to store my coins. I have seen the "flipits" type holders that are basically universal sized. Is that a better solution? Will the coin sliding in the plastic damage the coins? I am seeking a better and inexpensive way to store my coins. Stapling the holders gets tiring.

Does anyone have recommendations as to whether or not I should switch to the all plastic holders? If so where can I get bulk amounts and what brand is best?

Thanks,

Brooklyn Gallery has a good selection of coin supplies.

  • I like the Eagle Coin Holders, but they are kinda expensive. www.eaglecoinholders.com

www.brent-krueger.com has a pretty good selection of coin supplies.
  • Lordmarcovans` is a good suggestion. Here`s a few others that maybe of some help too. I usually use " Air-tites " Holders. I`m not sure if they rate as the best but, that`s what I typically go for.

I'd also recommend JP's corner. As for what type of holder to use, I highly recommend the Whitman hard plastic 2x2's. I like the ones with the black rings but you can get them without the rings too. You do have to buy the appropriate size for your coins, and it is (slightly) more expensive than other storage methods, but it's soooo much better than those cardboard things! Not only do they look better, but the actual hard plastic shell in front of your coin protects it much better and you don't have to worry about possible staple damage when removing them, and you don't have to worry about seperating the coins with cardboard or anything else when actually storing them in a box. Oh and did I mention, no possibility of having loose cardboard flecks creating nasty carbon spots on your coins?

Whitman also makes a nice, attractive blue storage box that is specifically meant to hold these holders.

So do you think I should stick with the staple 2x2s, get flip type ones or get something more sturdy? My first concern of course is the preservation of the coins, second is the cost.

  • The Capitol Holders are quite durable. I mainly use the Air-Tites for putting in my pocket to carry around. It`s easier to break an Air-Tite then a Capitol Holder if that is a concern.

I have 5 Capital Holders that I use for the ones I consider as my best/favorite raw coins that I have no intention of slabbing. Air-Tites are pretty good and covienient. 2x2`s I usually have for low grade stuff that is just one step above " junk box " coins. That`s how I deal with my raw coins.

I have a couple of coins in 2x2`s that have been in the original 2x2`s that I bought them in for 25 years now. They look pretty nasty too. Judging by just those two, I wouldn`t recommend 2x2`s for the long haul.
