72DDO in old rattler- could it upgrade?

I have spent way too much time today looking at some old slabs. I came across this old rattler and the Lincoln looks like a lock 65 and I guess my question is- could it go 6 on a good day? The scratches are on the slab( I told you it was an old slab).

If the images are accurate it looks as if the coin has mellowed to a somewhat RB color. If such is the case, it would probably not upgrade.

Here's a recently-slabbed 64 I received from PCGS. Yours looks a little better than mine - it might go 65 but I agree with Mark it might not because of the hints of toning.

BTW mine is for sale - check the BST board

maybe its a 5 because of the rarity, but otherwise it looks like a 4

I own 34 of the 1972 DDO cents in grades from MS-63RD to 67RD. Mostly PCGS but also some NGC, Hallmark & ANACS. This is one of my favorite dates.

Keep that coin in its current holder. While it has indeed mellowed in color a bit, as coinguy1 mentioned, the color is still very rich/lively and not washed out.
Also, the strike is less than that demanded of a 66 or 67. It is also not spot free.

Nevertheless, you will hurt the value of the coin by trying to get it in a new holder. This coin will still trade at a slight premium of the 65red grade for two reasons:

    1) The coin is relatively stable and unfooled with as it has been in the same holder for over 15 years.
    2) There will be a perception by some potential buyers that the coin will upgrade eventually.

I've never seen a 72DDO in a rattler. Leave it be!

I am not one of those that think it will upgrade. But I can say that SOME other buyers might feel differently and that is all it takes to create the perception for some of those buyers as to the upgrade potential. The allure of the old holder is growing stronger every day.
