Are Olympic Gold Medals really made of Gold? or is it just plated with silver underneath.

Heres an interesting article I read today on Yahoo, I always thought those Olympic medals were made of solid gold, I guess not.

Olympic Gold Medals

>>>>"Not counting labor, the metal content alone for the Athens medals comes to more than $400,000, and the gold medals are not even pure gold. Not that the International Olympic Committee (news - web sites) was considering solid gold medals -- the last medals of pure gold were awarded in Stockholm in 1912.

Nowadays, gold medals are actually made of silver, with a coating of six grams (about one-fifth of an ounce) of gold -- about $83 worth at current prices. "<<<<

The Greek firm Efsimon manufactured 986 gold, 986 silver and 1,150 bronze medals out of 28 pounds of gold and a ton each of silver and bronze. The Greek artist Elena Votsi carved a new design for the medals to mark the return of the Games to Greece.

The front of each medal shows a winged Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, alighting in the horseshoe-shaped Panathinaikos stadium in Athens, where the first modern Olympics was held in 1896. The Parthenon rises in the distance.

On the flip side is a flaming Olympic torch and an ancient Greek ode to the Games, penned by Pindar: ``O Mother of Gleaming Crowns of Contest, Olympia, Queen of Truth.''

The truth is, the gold medals are really just silver medals dipped in a 6-grams coating of gold - about $82 worth.
Yes my friend your own first post was correct!

A gold medal from the 1992 Barcelona games sold for $3,500 yesterday on eBay. There's a bronze from the 1984 games out there now, but I wouldn't trust the auction or the seller for that medal.
