Opinions on this beautiful NGC toned 34D Merc?

This coin is in an old NGC holder. It is toning in the slab as the years go by. It is real close to a FB coin depending on how you hold it. Do you think this should find a new home in a PCGS slab or does it look fine in the NGC slab. Oh yea, its currently graded MS66.

Sorry, but you asked. To be blunt, I hate that toning. image

I've never understood what people meant when they call stuff like that "pretty". To me it screams out for Jeweluster.

But that's just me. Good thing some folks like that look, because I have plenty of coins with that sort of toning (from old albums, I believe, but without the pretty colors or the symmetrical "target" effect).

If you dip that sucker, I would love it. There's a sharp Merc hidin' under there.

Seriously, though- that looks like the sort of toning that does not respond well to dipping. While I would be extremely tempted, it would probably be a bad idea.

Maybe the toning has some iridescence or colors I'm not seeing in the pics? Even so, it would still be a bit too mottled and uneven for my taste.

But who cares. It isn't mine. It's yours. And if it's beautiful to you, my opinion ain't worth a fiddler's fart. image

What color is that toning? Is it dark black/brown, or like a purplish blue?

    Exactly what I was thinking.

To say something complimentary, I'll add that you take very nice pictures. image

Thanks for the compliment on the pics lordmarcovan. The toning is dark purple Xpipe--Good eye.

i think that coin used to have more toning on it before getting dipped. but it is a nice coin, especially if you like it.

    fb? i'd say not.

Beautiful underlying coin, however, I too find the toning detracts from the eye appeal, and it's too deep to dip off effectively (will leave "scars") The bands are very nice and most would call "borderline FSB"

Ack! I agree once again with dorkarl. This coin was once dipped. Cannot do it again.

Keep an eye on that toning. Hopefully it is stable and does not darken any further to black.

It is a nice coin but the toning does appears distracting as the pics makes it look black. It probably looks better in person.

  • The middle bands are a little weak. I don't think PCGS would let that slide by. I don't like the black splotches, either, otherwise the toning is ok. Maybe if you dipped before you submitted, it might pass for a higher grade. I don't think they would downgrade it, though. It looks pretty solid at its' current grade to me.
