Help me grade the Lib $5

Image is reverse of Lib $5. Forget the obverse. Reverse is "worst" side. Opinions on grade?

Can't grade a coin based on one side. But if I were asked to just grade the reverse, if I used the grade I'd be inclined to say AU-53. If the obverse is considerably nicer than this, the coin *might* go 55 but otherwise 50 or 53.

You've got what appears to be a few small nicks in the fields there. 53-55 sounds good to me. Hope you didn't pay too much for it.

Date of coin is 1890. I don't think it's better than AU53. You all seem to mostly agree with me on this.

Grading one side of the coin really does not help much. Please reconsider and post a picture of the obverse. The majority of the times, the obverse carries the overall grade of the coin anyway.

On the reverse, yes -- I don't think the reverse is better than 53 on its own. But you say the obverse is better, and if the obverse looks 58+ (which it may not), or maybe even a very strong 55, then I think it could still get 55. If the obverse isn't that much better, I'd agree -- 53, tops.

I have yet to see a $5 lib that has a better looking reverse than the obverse as far as wear goes. I suspect this coin is for sale somewhere on ebay and you don't want to have any competition on it? mike
